Shouldn't it be a false start when the Broncos' right guard is moving his arm at the snap? He's doing it on every play, and it seems less like he's calling out protections and more like he's trying to bait the Chiefs into jumping offside.

Should also be a flag when the ball has yet to be snapped a half-second after the play clock reaches double zero. But everyone seems inclined to allow that one now.

I consider myself a knowledgeable football fan. In the past five days I've learned that not only is Chris Oladokun an actual NFL football player, but he's been on the Chiefs roster (albeit mostly the practice squad) for four seasons. There are people in witness protection more anonymous than the Chiefs' third-string QB.

I think you got your line backward. People in witness protection are more anonymous than just about everyone else.

Pretty sure you meant to say the Chiefs third-string QB is more anonymous than some people in witness protection.

I see it all the time in the college and pro game. Supposedly it's allowed because they are doing line calls (adjusting the blocking scheme), but when we did it back in the day, you'd call it out with simple words if the D was leaving a gap uncovered and you wanted to confirm who would be blocking whom. Something like 3 Tommy (Tackle blocks DT) 1 George, Guard is blocking the NT, 3 Charlie, Center is blocking the Tackle. 5-Eddie, Tight End is blocking the DE.

This NFL season is really limping (literally in some cases) into the playoffs. If the QBs starting this week's game aren't an indictment against expanding to an 18-game season, I don't know what would be.

I know that's true, I still don't know how it exactly works though with a silent count. Can the tackle on the off-side of the guard making the motion see the point? The QB used to just apply extra "pressure" to indicate when he wanted the ball to be hiked. How does it not cue the defense as well?

What's interesting about Labor Day weekend is that once upon a time a quarter-century ago, the NFL pushed the season back from starting on that weekend because ratings were down compared with other weeks, since people were still on vacations and boats and at barbecues and such. There were also complaints from season-ticket holders, which is a quaint notion nowadays.

Interesting side note: Detroit's CBS affiliate carried the game. I have Netflix, but opted for a reliable signal. Then again, maybe I shouldn't have watched - the Lions' so-called offensive line made Jared Goff look foolish.

The NFL doesn't need to be on Christmas, but you know everyone watches. I think of our own gatherings, and a pretty traditional one in my wife's family, and if the NFL is on, the game is on the TV. The NBA has been on Christmas forever, but you know how often the NBA has been on at the family gatherings? When the Nuggets have played, and that's been like one time during the day. They are usually the nightcap like last night.

The NFL on Christmas likely isn't going away at this point. Not after a successful Wednesday showing last year. If they did it on Wednesday they will do it on Tuesday too when it happens and all the other days are football days anyway.

I can remember when the NFL played on Labor Day weekend. I don't really see a problem to going back, especially if they expand the season. The preseason is almost moot at this point anyway.

With the NFL and NBA battling it out for control of Christmas viewers, there's the NHL, which takes a few days off, even in a year with the Olympic break upcoming.

When the NFL cut the schedule to three preseason games, the week off between the exhibition finale and the start of the season made no sense. If they go to 18 games, that's gone. I know some billed it as a way to give the stage to CFB, but even that's gone with all the Week 0 games and so many colleges scheduling openers the Thursday before the Labor Day weekend, not just for TV but to draw in a few more students before they take off for the weekend.
