I’m not a big fan of public shaming, but I’ll make an exception for this coach. This kind of **** has to stop.

I saw that. It was disgusting. But I have to wonder if maybe putting the kid in counseling might be better than banning him for 5 years because I kind of think he might have an abusive father.
It's quite the punishment for a kid because of following an adult's orders, an adult who is his dad at that. He could not have done it, but what would that have resulted in? I could see him being banned from the organization for a year, or has to play for a team with no family involved or something like that.
I have been around this long enough to know that behavior isn't surprising, but also I never would have let my kid on a team like that. I hope the families were aware of the type of coach they had, not that it makes it better, and weren't completely offguard. You can get a sense at tryouts and there is plenty of talk on FB groups and other places.
Regardless, kids suffering because of adults.

God, that's awful.
I have to throw this out there from a fun one today. The local coach I referenced in this, my kid played his team today. It was 16U, high school, JVish, level. However you want to look at it.
This coach got kicked out in spectacular fashion and we think because they didn't have another adult, it ended the game. But regardless, the umpire called the game in the fourth when it happened.
This coach is a total piece of work and everyone around here who has been around youth and tournament baseball knows of him. He was loud all day, per usual, but their fans loudly questioned a strikeout. The ump asked the coach to tell his crowd to cool it. The coach went over and was a total sarcastic ass. And the ump didn't have patience and tossed him. That led to a fight where the coach called the ump a **** face, among other things.
My son is the catcher and he said that the coach had already been warned (I didn't see it) and also said the ump asked him prior to the fireworks if he had ever seen anyone tossed. To me, this might be a little dicey for a ump to ask a player this, but it also sort of shows that it was headed in that direction.
Also, this is the second time we have played this team and the coach got tossed. One fellow parent brought up the getting kicked out of the organization from the hitting the umpire with a pitch situation and why does any organization let them play. Another said they have tried to get their kid to play with them forever and they have never even come close to agreeing and why would anyone?
That is my question, why does anyone agree to play for this asshat? I guess if you are just excited to have a team, don't know any better or have always been on that team and are all for that behavior.
It kind of sucked that the game ended early, but my kid's team was well in control and they all sort of thought it was funny. But man, the poor kids on that dude's team. I really don't know how he is allowed to keep doing this. I guess at least his kids are close to aging out.

As my kid finishes another baseball season and I'm not sure if high school or summer ball is still what everyone thinks is youth, but I think this is sort of interesting and how watered-down travel teams have impacted youth sports into high school.
My kid's high school baseball program has three summer teams, essentially a C, JV and varsity, but it is 15U, 16U and 18U. Last year when he entered the program the 15U team was pretty evenly split between incoming freshmen and sophomores. They also played a 16U schedule. This year, impacted by who played, the 15U team was all freshmen. And they were absolutely atrocious. They mostly played a 14U schedule.
They lost their last 17 games and most were easy run rules (17-1 type scores not uncommon). They almost all had "travel ball" experience. But in our town the main baseball organization, which used to focus on rec, developed a travel program and made so many teams that it was almost impossible to not be on one if one wanted to be. Rec is an actual joke now, but still exists for the kids who want to play it, so that is good. But this freshman team was made up almost entirely of kids who were on the third or fourth 14U teams in this program, most on the fourth.
We had a season-ending tournament in Lubbock last week and all the teams went. The freshmen played in a 14U field and got beat badly. Last year, my kid's 15U team played 16U there and went 3-2. To kind of see the discrepancy.
It is a long week there with a lot of downtime and it gave me a chance to talk with some of their parents. They are all understandably down and more than one of them said, I just don't know how this has happened, everyone on the team has played at a high level. That got me, because they haven't played on a high level (the top team in their old program, which was legit majors, beat their fourth team 18-1 this year, so similar results). They are actually finding that out, even if they don't believe it.
My kid's team has a freshman who obviously knows all these players. He's fantastic. He will be a fringe varsity player this year. His dad told me he went to one of their games last week while we weren't playing and that it looked like little league, and he was so glad his son was playing up (where they faced a kid from Houston touching 90 yesterday and actually had the lead in the seventh!).
But these parents, and probably the players, believe the are high level when they clearly aren't. Just because they played travel ball? It is crazy to me and shows how broken all this is. I am sure a few of these kids will become good high school players. Maybe all of them. Do they need the travel or high-level label, though? Especially if this is the result (they seem like they get along great, but it has to be demoralizing).
After seeing them in person, I told my brother-in-law who has an 11U player, don't even think about the level or even really high school yet. Have fun, grow, learn and see what happens, because you don't want this mindset.

My former boss and her husband spent untold thousands of dollars (that they didn't have) on lessons for their kid and travel ball and all that for years and years. He ended up playing ultimate frisbee on a club team in college. Great ROI.
