Maybe it’s just my loathing of Notre Dame. They preen as choirboys and believe they’re too good to play by the rules. This year, they don’t get invited to a bowl they think is good enough for them so they take their ball and go home. Cue up “Na na na na.”
I despise the institutional arrogance. But players are players, and Freeman actually seems like a decent guy, unlike Holtz or Kelly, so no animosity toward them.

I hate being put into position to “white knight” for Notre Dame. I covered the program for four seasons and it could be a pain - much of what you think about their alumni base is spot-on.

But, come on. The bowl system we once knew no longer exists. From a sheer recruiting standpoint, they would likely have to go into an exhibition game without Love and Price and probably others. So Notre Dame should go lose in the Insight Bowl and have that used against them? What if Carr blows out his knee? For … why, again? So ESPN can have programming?

This is just reflexive “hate” directed at a program that doesn’t seem to deserve it. Freeman seems like a good dude. What crime exactly are they committing here and who is the victim?

Here is another valid issue Notre Dame should have: I keep hearing that the committee considered the “metrics.” So here ND is calling off the dogs in a series of blowouts because the committee kept telling them they were safely in. If they knew that wasn’t the case, maybe they play games differently. I have no issue, in a vacuum, with the teams chosen. But Notre Dame has every right to be pissed about how it went down, even if you may be ****ty that they are an independent.

In FCS news, Illinois State upsets No. 1 NDSU. My best friend’s wife is an alum and his son is an ISU freshman. So he’s in high spirits right now.

NDSU had the game under control when I was watching.

This is good for FCS.

Illinois State absolutely dominated the game, had almost a 3-to-1 advantage in yards. Held the Bison to about 60 yards rushing and just six first downs, which is remarkable. The only thing that kept the game close was the Redbirds kept stepping on their ****. NDSU scored on a long bomb on the opening drive, a punt return, a pick six and a 4-yard drive set up by another interception.

Illinois State had a 25-minute TOP advantage. Only their miscues kept them from a decisive win, but they got what they deserved in the end. Credit to them.

1) Second-tier is too high an assignation for Shreveport or Boise.
2) I agree that players have abdicated the right to complain about having to play in bowls when they're getting paid. And I, too, am very curious about contracts. Maybe they are giving up salary. That's the way these deals should be structured.
3) In the case of Iowa State and Kansas State, there's no way administrators just put the issue to a team vote. They knew the vote would be no, and they were more than OK with it.
NIL contracts cannot have performance or playing time bonuses or conditions.

Nobody goes there hoping to play in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, either.
Well, then don't win the game if you're the head coach. That mayo dunking IS gross.

(But the game is more than OK. Last time I went, there should have been a wooden vessel for the pairs of animals wandering around ... worst monsoon I have ever endured for a football game and I endured three years of those out of the country. Also, I never want to hear a cowbell again, though Dak looked pretty good before heading to the Metroplex.)

It shouldn't be a players decision. If the coaching staff (or the interim caretaker if they are between coaches) realizes he won't have a full squad, doesn't have enough for a travel roster, decline a bowl. If players, whether its college players, NBA stars or whomever want to be viewed as "entertainers" they need to show up and perform. Maybe you only give a token appearance to give you a night off or whatever.
But I shed no tears for the bowls. College Football Inc. has been chasing dollars down every avenue. Everyone thinks they have to do what the Big 10 and the SEC are doing, not realizing those conferences have no concern for their future viability. I'd argue they are invested in their downfall.

That’s like 45 minutes from me, and I’ve never heard of it until right now.
I'd heard of it when then-DII Tarleton State played in it one time, but damn, that was nearly a decade ago. I *guess* it's a minor bone thrown to the D-II also-rans. Don't know what the big prize is: a box filled with goodies from the Collin Street Bakery?

They can weigh down their blocking sleds with fruitcake...

Church this morning. We got to the reading of the scripture. Two verses in it turned out someone forgot to silence their phone and the SportsCenter stinger alert went off right about the time they were announcing the field.
There are all kinds of religions
