He already made a run at Tony Rojas and made PSU up its offer to a kid with a blown out leg who may not even be ready for the start of the season.

College football administrators have screwed everything up by saying yes to everyone offering them money. TV, the bowls, private equity, etc. etc. I have no confidence they will be able to settle this amongst themselves.
How about an actual "portal" for players AND coaches that doesn't open until after the National Championship game.

The problem is that the Championship Game is not played until January 19. Most schools have started winter semester by then so getting the players enrolled would be problematic..

None of this ever seemed to be a problem when the P4 teams were only poaching the G6 teams.

I'd prefer they stop the charade and cut it all loose from universities. Let the teams survive on their own if they can, without any connection to the ol' alma mater.

I think the part about an athlete also being a student became optional after the pandemic. Now athletes do not have to attend class but instead take on-line courses. I wonder what security measures are taken to ensure that the athletes actually take the tests.

Not a pandemic thing. Joe Burrow literally never set foot in a classroom at LSU.

It's also not particularly unusual. My youngest is an ASU student and a large percentage of his classes have been online, even when he was living on campus.

Enrollment and attending class in person are different things.

Universities don't want employees. The whole arrangement has to be based on being a student.

Too much liability involved in players as employees. They want to make the millions on football without any liability for injury to their employees.

I think she was a very special case in the Instagram/social media world. I think elite CFP players going all remote pre-Covid was just a recruiting perk.

I'm gonna sound like Old Guy but there was something to be said for being able to see the guys you watched on Saturdays in class with you Monday through Friday. I remember I had a starting wide receiver from Pitt's football team in my last class at Pitt and frequently saw Julius Page in the Cathedral as we both took night classes on the same day.

I was in a class at USC with Anthony Davis. He wore jeans and a T-shirt, like everybody else. Then, he rushed for more than 200 yards in a victory at Oregon. On Monday, he showed up wearing pimp clothes and a Super Fly hat. A week later, he was driving a baby blue Cadillac convertible. He parked in front of the Student Union, getting there on a street that was only used by golf carts of the custodial crew.

I was in the same dorm as Jerewl Thomas at San Jose State in the early 80s. A couple of days after being drafted by the Rams, he was driving one of the baddest black Porsches any one of us had ever seen.

Fast forward to the fall. The Rams were playing, I believe, the Cowboys in a prime time game at the Big A. The whole dorm was watching. Sometime in the second half he got the ball and took it for about 60 yards. The place erupted. Then Howard Cosell starts praising him as being from San Jose State and the place erupted again.

30 years or so later, I'm the SE of his hometown paper. One night was talking to the lady who shoots a lot of sports for the schools and I mentioned the two stories mentioned above. She started smiling and said "I remember that Porsche. "

You certainly date yourself when you talk about seeing a star football player in class.

They probably don't see it that way, but they are being robbed of a true college experience by being forced into online classes only (which also makes it easier for colleges to justify their student/athletes missing more true class time).

I believe there's tremendous value to going to class, interacting with students and professors, etc. I think DU even refunded some of Micro Jr.'s law school tuition money because they were strictly on-line for about nine months. No way was he getting the whole experience.

Not coincidentally I think the 2022 bar passage rates in Colorado and some other states were down by about 3-4%. from those in previous years who had no online classes. Or at least that's what I thought I saw.
