I went to school at a small-ish college that's a lot bigger now. Still D-II but big enough to think about making a move. I used to play video games in the student union at lunch with the basketball team's starting small forward who was a good player — both video and basketball. Also had classes with various athletes across the board and got to be acquaintances with some post-college when I stared covering games. Didn't think it was a big deal.

My college intramural basketball team looked up Up UP one night and saw that the opponents towering above us also played Saturdays on our major conference football team. At least two of them later played five-plus seasons in the NFL.

On defense I had to handle their point guard, who was better-known to the rest of the country as our starting quarterback. No problem, I was pretty quick myself, and I was amped up for the challenge.

I stuck to him like glue for, ohhh, the first 20 seconds or so.
The final score was 100-39, and it wasn't as close as the score indicates.

Really shines a light on how dumb UAB's AD is. We're still paying this clown $100k a month less whatever his high school salary is.

Dilfer's Texas comp is Todd Dodge, who had legendary success in the high school ranks, fell massively flat at North Texas, and then resumed winning upon his return to preps. (Dodge is actually a great guy IRL.)
And Dodge was one helluva high school quarterback. Fun to watch!

Dilfer just sold his house here for about $2m. What's funny about that is that he bought it a year ago, after his first two disastrous seasons coaching UAB. He was damn near fired and got one more season by the skin of his teeth - but after two years living in an apartment, that's when he chose to buy a home.

Good judgement seems in short supply for him.

Profit or loss? How much did he pay for it?

I dunno. One of the message board guys spotted it on Zillow. I imagine that he has enough through the way of assets and income that he employs a smart CPA to make such things work for him.

Maybe he can win again at a private high school where he can pay for players. We have a first year HC who pretty well can't be worse. Recruiting and transfer class looks pretty good. We'll see. At least some of the fans who were voting with their wallets will go back to buying tickets.

That Zillow listing should have the sales history,
including his own purchase price from last year.

No biggie. Just wondered if he took a big loss off the field, too. 😖

I wonder if coaches set up an LLC under their "brand" for things like the house or other assets.

Could-would be a tax thing, of course, but also if a guy is whacked then he's not on the hook for the house. The LLC would be, and he wouldn't have any skin in the mix.

No bank would lend to a single member LLC with no assets except for the house it is buying without a personal guarantee from the member. The LLC setup is for privacy also.

OK, so this is Division II, but Tyrone Wheatley is out at Wayne State (Detroit) after three lousy years, including an 0-11 showing in 2025. A former JUCO coach was promoted to replace him: https://footballscoop.com/2026/02/1...michigan-running-back-morgan-state-head-coach

It was his second college head-coaching job, after underwhelming at Morgan State. The timing is odd, but likely because he might land back in the NFL as an assistant coach. This pretty much is the window for that.

Holy ****, that story needs a copy editor.
