NFL Wild Card Weekend thread

Maybe I've been missing something, but the TV graphics are so damn good, that I can't understand what pearls of wisdom are coming out of these guys' mouths that make it worth the shouting and fawning and tired cliches . . . and utter mistakes.

I started muting the games because my wife often goes to bed early for 4 a.m. work shifts. But now it's just a habit.

It's not just the announcers. It's the constant music/sound effects over the PA system or the cranked-up pep bands. And the worst culprits are the full-volume commercials and promos, each screaming for your attention.

Ironic that a guy who dreamed of doing play-by-play is thoroughly disgusted with the current state of play-by-play announcers.

You often can't hear the announcers over the crowd mike anyway. I often watch with the sound muted and closed-captioning activated.

Interesting stat. Sean McVay will be coaching his 15th playoff game versus his 15th different opponent.

Pittsburgh certainly didn’t deserve that game, but on the fumble return TD how was that hit to Rodgers’ helmet not a penalty?

Yup. The officials missed a few calls, but that one was inexcusable, especially considering that it pretty much put the game away. As bad as they were playing most of the game, the Steelers still had a shot if the officials had called it correctly.

I think it was Spears that said that about Stroud, might've been both, but it was pretty obvious he just wasn't comfortable in the protection, the snap exchanges, none of it.

But I can't imagine him playing worse than he did tonight and Houston never blinked on defense.

If he can be a little better or just less careless, that defense is a problem

What makes you think he will play better? The guy panics under pressure. The biggest mistake the Steelers made defensively was not blitzing him on every down.

Different sport but same sentiment...UConn beats Clemson at the buzzer in the 1990 Sweet 16. Audio isn't synched up with the video but you'll still hear the silence instead of someone screeching or a sudden switch to the studio.

I’m the opposite. Unless it’s a game where I have a strong rooting interest, I’m scrolling throughout the game and look up to see the replay when the announcer’s tone shift signals something worth seeing has happened.

I mute when possible because a) there are few times I care about what the announcers are saying, and b) the commercials drive me nuts.

Edit: c) @micropolitan guy 's point - I could not hear the espn announcers over the crowd noise at the peach bowl. It usually happens with ESPN/ABC college football and NBA.

That seems to be a trend in a lot of sports — maybe all of them. It’s been noticeable in college basketball games and major tennis events I’ve watched over the past couple of years.

Anybody got the starting times and networks for the College Kickoff Classics in August?

The more I think about "the question" Coen was asked at the presser, the less I have a problem with it. We've seen what passes for "journalism" in the WH Press room these days.

That Bills-Jags was viewed by more than either LA teams' games is surprising to me. It's not like the LA and Boston markets are small. And Golden Globes only had 8.6m viewers. The new Fear Factor, with the Niner-Eagles lead-in on Fox, did 6m viewers and change.

And obviously, im just stating these things to irritate people who don't care about viewership or where games or slotted. :)

The only way that's happening nowadays is if some enterprising producer cuts everybody's mics.
