Yes, but that is because the Browns were stupid. Two years earlier, Mayfield looked like he was starting to live up to his draft status and helped them make the playoffs and win a game. Then he played through a shoulder injury in 2021 and it showed in his performance. Letting him play through that was dumb. Evaluating him based on how he played hurt was incredibly dumb. They have been paying for it ever since. Those drunken bastards don't even remember he was there.
Seriously, neither side regretted the move at the time. He wanted out and they weren't crying about letting him go
I don't think that is true at all. There are guys who are held back by circumstances, but there are also plenty of guys who just suck, as others already pointed out.I do think the career arcs of Goff and Mayfield indicate there are no "draft busts" - only really cruddy teams that don't know what they are doing. I almost wonder if Kyle Shanahan could revive Justin Fields career at this point.
Were they "physical" busts or mental busts? They kind of both had emotional problems, their play wasn't able to compensate for like they did in college. I'd forgotten Leaf missed his entire second season in San Diego due to injury.Ryan Leaf and Johnny Manziel

Kyle Shanahan was the head coach when the 49ers drafted Trey Lance. Do you realize how bad you have to be that Kyle Shanahan can't make you look good? Were they "physical" busts or mental busts? It is interesting just trying to remember who the head coaches were for some of these failed QBs. Does the QB make the coach or does the coach make the QB is one of those chicken and egg deals. I don't know if any HC had a second job after having some of these names mentioned, or had a second chance at developing a QB.
Leaf: Kevin Gilbride, June Jones, Mike Riley
Manziel: Mike Pettine
Russell: Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable
Terrific college QB... but I probably saw every pass he threw at Oregon and I never thought he was a pro. Getting picked third was crazy.Akili Smith.
Lance didn't help things by getting injured his rookie year. But time has shown he wasn't ready for the leap from Fargo to Santa Clara. Is he still holding clipboards in Dallas?Kyle Shanahan was the head coach when the 49ers drafted Trey Lance. Do you realize how bad you have to be that Kyle Shanahan can't make you look good?
I get the theory you are trying to push, but it just doesn't work.
I'm not going to say Lance was a complete bust along the lines of Leaf, Russell, etc. He didn't really get a fair shot. He was going to be the starter in Yr. 2 then got hurt. When he was getting back in Yr. 3, Purdy burst onto the scene and that was it for Lance. The other busts got realistic shots without getting hurt.Lance didn't help things by getting injured his rookie year. But time has shown he wasn't ready for the leap from Fargo to Santa Clara. As @Batman notes, he's on his third stop and still holding a clipboard. The result of a 25-13 record vs. AFC foes so far. One thing you don't want is for your conference brethren to beat the other conference. The seven seed in the NFC currently sits at 5-2. It may take 11 wins to get into the playoffs in that conference.
It's the Jets, man. It made perfect sense. Can we also agree that that draft was hindered by COVID not only minimizing the reps QBs had, but also the way teams could evaluate QBs. I mean the Jets took Zach Wilson with the second pick, they didn't even have another QB who had ever started an NFL game in the building when camp opened. Not a back-up, not an assistant or anything. That made no sense.
I'm really surprised we don't hear more about owners deciding which QB the team drafts, whether the coaches and GM agree or if he fits the system.
