Yes, but that is because the Browns were stupid. Two years earlier, Mayfield looked like he was starting to live up to his draft status and helped them make the playoffs and win a game. Then he played through a shoulder injury in 2021 and it showed in his performance. Letting him play through that was dumb. Evaluating him based on how he played hurt was incredibly dumb. They have been paying for it ever since.

I will give them credit. They have done some smart things this year, including a very strong rookie class. They added a couple of studs on defense and a quality running back. Gabriel at least looks like a competent pro who could be a long-term backup who occasionally starts. Sanders was probably worth the flier that late.

They also managed to screw the Steelers with the Flacco deal. I don't know that it helps them much, but their fans are probably getting a kick out of it. No way in hell the Bengals win that game with Browning.

I do think the career arcs of Goff and Mayfield indicate there are no "draft busts" - only really cruddy teams that don't know what they are doing. I almost wonder if Kyle Shanahan could revive Justin Fields career at this point.

I don't think that is true at all. There are guys who are held back by circumstances, but there are also plenty of guys who just suck, as others already pointed out.

Were they "physical" busts or mental busts? They kind of both had emotional problems, their play wasn't able to compensate for like they did in college. I'd forgotten Leaf missed his entire second season in San Diego due to injury.
It is interesting just trying to remember who the head coaches were for some of these failed QBs. Does the QB make the coach or does the coach make the QB is one of those chicken and egg deals. I don't know if any HC had a second job after having some of these names mentioned, or had a second chance at developing a QB.

Terrific college QB... but I probably saw every pass he threw at Oregon and I never thought he was a pro. Getting picked third was crazy.

His kid is now a freshman QB for the Ducks. Makes me feel old as hell.

IDK, I think the Goff-for-Stafford trade is one of those rare deals that worked out pretty well for both teams and for both players.

I'm not going to say Lance was a complete bust along the lines of Leaf, Russell, etc. He didn't really get a fair shot. He was going to be the starter in Yr. 2 then got hurt. When he was getting back in Yr. 3, Purdy burst onto the scene and that was it for Lance. The other busts got realistic shots without getting hurt.

No. He's holding them in Los Angeles now, with the Chargers.

As @Batman notes, he's on his third stop and still holding a clipboard. And not to ever agree w/@outofplace , but if Kyle Shanahan whiffs on you, it's probably over. He'll dodge the Leaf/Russell comps b/c he's not a deranged lunatic (though Leaf has cleaned up) and I think people will grade him on a curve and w/some sympathy b/c he was drafted from a I-AA school fresh off a season in which he played one game due to the pandemic. But he's definitely a bust.

The result of a 25-13 record vs. AFC foes so far. One thing you don't want is for your conference brethren to beat the other conference.

I mean the Jets took Zach Wilson with the second pick, they didn't even have another QB who had ever started an NFL game in the building when camp opened. Not a back-up, not an assistant or anything. That made no sense.
