Belichick exploited “loophole” in NFL rules to run extra time off the clock

Yes, the Patriots have been punished twice by the league for violating the rules, but give Belichick credit for finding every possible advantage within the rules, too. If there is a loophole, he will find it. If there is a tendency, he will exploit it. That goes for officials, too.

I think some of the appearance that the Patriots get away with penalties too often comes from scouting the tendencies of officials. If they figure out that an officiating crew is rarely calls defensive holding, they tell their guys to try to get away with more grabbing in coverage and it clearly works.

I also wonder if that is what led to Spygate and the issues with deflated balls. They probably thought those rules were so minor that the league wouldn't bother. That thinking led to what most perceived as an overreaction by the NFL to the deflated footballs.

Clearly the approach, constantly pushing at the edges of league rules, has worked well. This isn't a complaint or an attempt to somehow discredit their accomplishments. It's an acknowledgement of part of the genius of Belichick.

I told her that I seriously doubt that the parents knew of the law firm. He was born in some small town in Georgia and played college ball at NC State.

We actually had an argument about this.

You should hear her any time an athlete takes a swig of oxygen. I don't care if a linebacker had to run 100 yards on consecutive plays in Denver.

She sees an athlete taking a hit of oxygen, and it is, "these babies with their oxygen. Shouldn't they be in shape?"

We usually keep our squabbles in-house, though.
