NFL Week 7: Generic QB number, generic thread title, generic team name

Two schools have produced three separate Super Bowl champion QBs: Alabama (Starr, Namath, Stabler) and Purdue (Dawson, Griese, Brees). Notre Dame (Theismann, Montana) and Stanford (Plunkett, Elway) each have two.

BYU has also had two (Jim McMahon and Steve Young).

Just looked it up. The following football factories each have produced more Hall of Fame QBs than either USC, Ohio St. or Oklahoma, who don't have any. Wake Forest (Sonny Jurgensen), Northwestern (Otto Graham), Navy (Roger Staubach) and Columbia (Sid Luckman).

He was throwing to JuJu Smith Schuster, who you may be familiar with.
He was throwing to Adoree Jackson, who is now a great db for the Titans.
Justin Davis played in the NFL.

USC isn't Alabama, but he played with some talent at USC.

I wasn't suggesting Darnold didn't have any talent around him at USC. I knew he played with Smith-Schuster and Jackson. Jackson was primarily a cornerback at USC. The most offensive touches he had in a single season was 34 in 2015.

I still wouldn't say the talent he played with was so overwhelming that it covered for him not being very good. I think that may have been true of Leinart and some of Darnold's other predecessors, but I don't see it with Darnold. I think he has issues with consistency and discipline. He needs to be coached up and he needs talent around him. He isn't getting any of that with the Jets.

Just looked it up. The following football factories each have produced more Hall of Fame QBs than either USC, Ohio St. or Oklahoma, who don't have any. Wake Forest (Sonny Jurgensen), Northwestern (Otto Graham), Navy (Roger Staubach) and Columbia (Sid Luckman).

I mentioned this on another thread when this topic came up, but it really is remarkable how USC has become "Journeyman Quarterback U."
They've had 22 quarterbacks that have played in the NFL. There are a lot of recognizable names, and even some guys who have even had long careers, but the only one that has ever had what you'd call a great NFL career is Carson Palmer.
Of the 22 on the list, Palmer is the only one to start more than 100 NFL games. Rodney Peete is No. 2 on the list with 87 starts. Which is weird, because they've produced plenty of QBs that were drafted highly and busted out (Todd Marinovich, Sanchez, Matt Leinart) or played well enough to earn a starting gig somewhere and then couldn't hold it (Matt Cassel, Rob Johnson).

If the Jets have the pick and Gase is still the HC - no way you go to the Jets. Don't know what is more damning, Darnolds struggles or Tannehill's resurgence since getting away from Miami.

Gase will not be coaching the Jets next season.

Rodney Peete was a sixth round pick, Barkley fourth, Booty in the fifth, Rob Johnson fourth... Leinart, Sanchez and Marinovich weren't good pros, but 1-for-4 is a lot different than 1-for-8, and it's probably more that the sample size of highly regarded USC quarterbacks is too small, and spans too many years, to make any conclusions anyway. (In fact, if you're trying to determine "what leads to QB success in the NFL?", the pedigree of the college program is probably like 50th on the list. Mahomes went to Oklahoma, but Aaron Rodgers went to football powerhouse California, Lamar Jackson went to Louisville... Drew Brees went to Purdue, which is a power conference school but not a national title contender.)

That he and Greggggg Williams actually got on the plane back to NY on Sunday must mean that they are keeping the coaching staff around to get the number one pick.

If Gase and Greggggg aren't ****canned four seconds after the #1 pick is secured, then ownership is grossly incompetent.

As one of the few public Jets fans on the board, I think Darnold is perfectly fine. The only thing I can blame him for is Gase being the coach because he fell for his sales pitch. But even then I could see Gase mentioning Peyton Manning a lot and I'm sure Darnold idolized Manning and...it is what it is...Of course I can blame ****ty ownership for letting a 22-year-old pick their ****ing head coach.

All that being said, they should absolutely shop the No. 1 pick and see if there is someone willing to pull a Ditka and trade their entire 2021 Draft + some for the pick. The Jets can't go lower than a slot to pick Ja'Marr Chase though. I feel like the Cowboys might be 4-12 and this could work out.

The downside with this is that the decision on Darnold's 5th-year option is coming up. So they are going to have to have a better QB contingency plan in place than Joe Flacco in case Darnold is still injury prone, etc.

IIRC, Leinart also had some self-destructive tendencies. Didn't he gain a reputation as a party guy?
