On this date in 1974, Richard M. Nixon announced he was stepping down as president of the United States - the first man ever to do so. He announced his departure in the face of an imminent impeachment trial - and possible removal from office - over Watergate.

Thanks for the informative post!

Did you by chance know Carl Bernstein, back in his days at a weekly somewhere, when he had a lot to learn?

And 15 years ago Jerry Garcia died.

Also, today is this guy's favorite day ...

Did you know that on November 13, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence and the request came from his wife?

Obviously many of those posting here weren't born or fail to see the significance of both the date and the event.

Or they are well aware of said event and find more edification in taking the mickey out of you.

Or they don't have anything else better to do. Trust me TrooperBari, it takes more than an anonymous post to rile me.

One of the most significant events in American political history and this thread is being mocked because of who started it.

Isn't junior high mentality great. Carry on kiddies.

Well, it would help if the thread-starter actually got his facts right.

Nixon announced to the nation on the night of Aug. 8 that he was resigning. It didn't take effect officially until the next day, however, and Ford was sworn in just after noon on Aug. 9.

Of course I was born. What are you trying to say? That some of us were created in a lab?

True, Tony. This is the date the resignation became effective and Nixon flew off into the sunset

Thanks spnited. The posts by some, particularly those who call themselves moderators, amazes me.

I understand your frustration, and I agree with the sentiments in spnited's post.

But, Drip, a better headline on the thread to begin with might have helped avert all this.

Yup. I just corrected that in the post above before I saw your response.

I remember well because I was a paper boy delivering the p.m. paper (remember those? ;) ) and the huge headline for Aug. 9 paper was Ford Sworn In. I kept a copy for many years but got rid of it in one of my seven or eight moves since then.

@Care bear, are you serious?
@Ace, Some around here are test tube babies.

I disagree. You've got a lot of people for whatever reason, want to create problems. It's usually the same ones - and I won't name the posters - over and over again. There's a guy who pretends to be a moderator who instigates; there's another wiseacre who practices one liners; look, let's keep it on what the post is about, Nixon stepping down.
