Everyone has figured for a month he was dead man walking. Last night just solidified that it was going to be today. They had zero choice.

You would think the interim coach would be less sleazy by default but DJ Durkin is there to save the day.

It was just yesterday when Gus Malzahn was going to be the next greatest head coach ever at Auburn.

Then it fell apart when Auburn gave up the 21-3 lead in the title game and lost to Florida State.

Yes, but some of the palace intrigue that forever surrounds that program is what set up his down year to become a catastrophe. There were important people down there that never bought into Chizik, just like there were people looking for the first opportunity to run Terry Bowden out of town even as he started off by piling up wins.

They seem good at turning on people. Why did they hate on Bowden? He wasn't one of those outsiders from places like Iowa or Idaho. You knew they'd run Harsin out of there. But the Bowden contempt always confused me.

Auburn has now fired consecutive coaches before the end of season 3. And, yes, I think that's a first in SEC history.
There have been a couple of occasions in which consecutive coaches did not make it to the end of season 3, but the tenure of at least one ended voluntarily (taking another job) or tragically (Mike Leach at Mississippi State).
