Belichick thought he could just roll in and let his buddy Lombardi run the program while he was a do-nothing figurehead. Herm Edwards tried the same thing at Arizona State, except the coordinators ran the show. Not that "lack of institutional control" means anything anymore, but that's when those things happen.

Yeah, Georgia Tech is 7-0. But a crummy call in Winston-Salem and a gift-wrapped game in Durham - Duke gave them 17 points (90-some-yard fumble return for a touchdown, a botched hold on one FG attempt, a missed FG attempt from a reasonable distance, then settling for three after multiple chances at the Georgia Tech 1) and then the Yellow Jackets scored two late touchdowns - doesn't have me convinced that Georgia Tech is Top 10.

I hope I'm wrong because the Yellow Jackets might be the best ACC representative in the CFP based on the season to date.

I went to Tech and I’ll tell you the Jackets are way overrated. Their best wins are 4-2 Wake (which hasn’t beaten anyone worth anything, either) in OT, 4-3 Duke and a last-second win over Clemson.

I think Tech is pretty good and I love Haynes King, but top 10? No way. If the bubble doesn’t burst before then, I fully expect Tech to get exposed by Georgia.

I definitely think they are still living off the shine of that Clemson win (and maybe a little bit off forcing Georgia to eight OTs last year) with that ranking, but they've mostly benefited from all of the teams in front of them falling. Being consistent week in and week out is rare these days.

Hate to come here to criticize refs, knowing the backlash that will come. That said: The striped shirts for USC-Notre Dame were ridiculously horrible. I don't know their affiliation -- Big Ten or ACC.
Another "that said": ND dominated the trenches and deserved to win.
From the start, ND defenders were grabbing USC's receivers and/or arriving early on almost every pass play. No calls. Then, they called two pass interference penalties in a row, and suddenly, the receivers were open, passes were being completed. The Trojans had their best moments of the game, including a 66-yard touchdown pass.
Plenty of video available of TWO holding penalties on ND's critical kickoff return touchdown. One Trojan had a clean shot to bury the guy at about the 25-yard line. No calls.
Here are the clinchers to the bad officiating. Twice -- yes TWICE -- Trojans receivers tried to make difficult catches on low passes. Hard to tell if they were good catches, the ball ended up rolling away from the receiver, an Irish defender picked it up. Ruling on the field: Interception. Not clean catch and fumble. Interception. TWICE. Video reviews correctly ruled incomplete passes.

The pass interference calls and non-calls are particularly jarring. I watch a lot of games every Saturday. So that means I'm switching conferences constantly. Some conferences allow basically assault from defensive backs and there's never a call. Until there is one. Other conferences call it tighter. Then every once, while someone somewhere along the line will throw in an offensive pass interference, which is probably not the right call 85.3% of the time. Why can't college football agree on what the f*** past interference is? If you've got your arms around the receiver's arms, you're interfering. If you're pulling on his shoulder so he can't lift his arms, you're interfering. You knock him down, you're interfering.

Wisconsin QB had the ball knocked out of his hand before attempting to pass. Even with replay, it sure looked like a fumble to me. Replay ruled it an incomplete pass.
One of the night games - Bama-Tennessee maybe? - almost the exact same play. Ruled a fumble, never went to replay.
I have no idea.

Great play, but should have been a PI/holding call. One of Tennessee's receivers, not the intended one, got mugged in the end zone while trying to come out of his break. It's No. 3, the tight end, and he gets hit between the N and the T in the end zone.

So from what I see that hit comes before the pass is in the air, so it can’t be PI. And it looks like a hit, not a hold. I don’t know what the college rule is, but if it’s the same as the pro rule contact is legal within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, which in this case is the 1. Is that within 5 yards? Looks like it.

In any case, it had nothing to do with the play as the QB was looking right the whole way and was already in the process of throwing that way at the time off the hit.

Forgot to mention the facemask penalty committed on Trojans QB Maiava. He was scrambling, the rusher reached out and got the mask, Maiava's head jerked, he got away, but threw imcomplete. Just the QB and the rusher, not a bunch of players in a pile.
Facemask has to be the easiest penalty to call. How do they miss it?

There is no 5-yard rule in college. This would be the side judge's key. (He's the official on the near sideline back at the far pylon.) I would have passed on a flag here as well.
