That explains it. My understanding is that before Bobby Lowder's bank went broke he owned the Auburn program. I don't think a successful SEC coach sleeping with the daughter of a run of the mill trustee would be sufficient grounds for termination.

I sat in the student section at the 95 Iron Bowl in Jordan-Hare (long story) and was shocked to hear Auburn fans gleefully anticipating when he was gone. Mind you he won that game to run his record on the Plains to 28-4-1 and was scandal free at that moment in time.

I've always thought the animosity about Bowden from fans stemmed a lot from his name and the FSU-AU history. He was 47-17-1 at AU including an undefeated season (with Dye's guys). He definitely got crossways at the end with Lowder and probably some other donors. That was about when the Yella Cowboy started making waves.


IMO one interesting nugget: this will be the third interim coach leading Auburn against Alabama since 1998 - Bill Oliver, Cadillac Williams and now Durkin.
