The “Kirk Cousins is not it” thing started well before Week 16.

Washington was seemingly so averse to the guy the franchise was willing to stake itself to Haskins instead.

They didn’t think he was worth a long term expensive deal given the mediocrity of the franchise and the biggest market advantage in the NFL is a middle-upper tier QB on a rookie deal.

I think Cousins was hell bent on getting out of Washington and knew he would make a lot of money elsewhere anyway.

And I believe in being fair to everyone, even Dan Synder. The Redskins were able to bring in Alex Smith, who had gone to the Pro Bowl the previous two years, to replace Cousins and they were 6-3 and seemingly going to the playoffs when he got hurt

The Redskins then signed Case Keenum the next year and drafted Dwayne Haskins. I believe any action taken to minimize the presence of Case Keenum playing quarterback is defensible, no matter how low the odds.

But if Smith had not gotten hurt, I do think that the sad history of the 21st century WFT would be marginally less depressing.

There was a report that he told the owners he wanted a say in the hiring of the new GM if they kept him. Give him credit for chutzpah, if not actual ability to coach football.

The main problem with Cousins is that he is a classic low-ceiling, high floor guy. He's not going to win you anything with his feet, and considering he has one of the best young receivers in the league and a guy who had 14 touchdowns last season and he's still going to throw checkdowns to the fullback.

The Wilfs seem the types to avoid drama where possible (to which the correct response is they never should have bought the Vikings as it goes with the territory), and they at least said they wanted the GM hired first so I would be shocked if there was anything to the Kiffin stuff. Although I'm compelled to admit it would be entertaining.

Re: Kiffin: Depends on what he perceives the expectations will be in Oxford. If they have the same delusions of grandeur that caused them to execute David Cutcliffe years ago, I'd get the hell out, too. Say all you want about how great and competitive the SEC is. There comes a point where self-preservation kicks in. If you've been in an SEC gig for a couple of years and made big bucks and positioned yourself for a similarly paying job in the NFL, which is based on competitive balance, human instinct just might guide you to take a look.
