We'll need it soon enough, and Schefter and Mort give us a good one to chew on.

I mean ... if this happens, it would be in the "now I've seen everything" milieu.

Sources: Raiders preparing to go after Gruden

I guess it's safe to say Jack Del Rio has not had a very good year.

Every year someone floats a team is going after Gruden and it never happens. I'll need to see him on a sideline before I believe any of these.

Gruden had one good year. Right person for that Bucs team that Dungy couldn't get over the himp. And he's been out of coaching almost a decade. That's a lifetime in the NFL. Vermeil was an outlier. I don't understand the fascination.

And after winning that first year with Dungy's team he went 45-51 over six seasons.

I don't get it either.

As I said with the Tennessee job, he must have an opt-out clause that's setting up another round of MNF negotiations.

Don't undersell what he did with the Raiders, though. That was he-man lifting to get them to the brink. They were going backward before he got there.

To be fair, I can't recall any coach ever getting over a himp.

And still has a QB whisper reputation, despite the fact the only one he really did anything with was Gannon. Brad Johnson was a fine caretaker for that dominant D. Once Johnson declined, he mother****ed Chris Simms within an inch of his life, though, to be fair, Chris Simms seems like the type of guy you'd like to mother**** within an inch of his life.

I don't know if the Raiders lose to any team other than the Gruden-coached Bucs in that Super Bowl. I don't know if the Bucs win against anyone other than the Raiders. This has the making of an omnishambles of the highest order. Del Rio still has $15 mil or so coming to him so he just can't quit, as much as he may want to.

I'm to the point that I reflexively disbelieve all "Gruden to..." rumors. They're simply not worth paying any attention to. Call me when it's "Gruden hired as HC by...".

I posted this on the Week 17 thread, but probably better here: I don’t know what else John Fox was supposed to do with his rosters.

Do like Todd Bowles did - exceed expectation. I think Caldwell is being shown the door because the Lions had the best and healthiest QB in the division and didn't make the playoffs. The Vikings are tearing it up with Case Keenum - an undrafted free agent on his fourth team.

Come on, he regularly had the third-string RB in the game for crucial situations and the playcalling was abysmal. If you're saying he got the most out of this team, you're insane.

This was Gruden’s response last night when his favorite Bay Area reporter got a hold of him.

C’mon man, I’m out with my wife. This is crazy,” Gruden said in a phone interview. “I was supposed to be going to Tampa last week. What have they got? I don’t know.”

Asked how to best characterize the situation, Gruden said, `I’ve got nothing to report. I’m at an Outback Bowl event with my wife.”

Notice the lack of denial.

This is totally happening.

Echoing this - Nothing Fox did really seemed to click in Chicago. It's not like the team lacked talent; Cohen showed some spark the first few weeks, but by the end of the year he was essentially not being played. (Said disgruntled fantasy football owners everywhere.) It didn't seem like individual players were getting better. Contrast the Bears with the Jets, another team that didn't have many expectations coming into the season, but they were exceeding expectations until their QB got hurt.
