Spring Training began today for the World Champion New York Yankees and the two-time defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies. It also was the beginning for a few other teams.

ST starts tomorrow for the Red Sox. It'll be interesting to see how successful Theo's "defense first" mentality will be.

The soon-to-be-last-place Mets check in tomorrow.
Can't wait for Omar and Jerry to tell us how great Ollie Perez is going to be this year and how much Daniel Murphy has improved.

Good news for the Braves. Jurrjens' MRI reveals only inflammation, no damage to labrum or rotator cuff:

He can resume throwing again as early as next week.

Wow. So you think 0-162 is possible?

Nah, they play the Pirates a few times.

Yeah. They also play the Nats a few times too. Realistically, the Mess should win at least 70 games.

I actually like the Royals chances better than the Mets chances this year. It's not because I'm all that optimistic about the Royals.

The Mets' collection of mediocre catchers grows by one. They've signed Rod Barajas:

Also, the currently unsigned Carlos Delgado will miss at least four months after his second hip surgery in nine months:

Damon to the Tigers, so says (of all people) ESPN's Karl Ravech:

One year, $8 million ...

I'd say 70 was a realistic top win expectation for the Nats, so for a fan 75 is not too optimistic.

Like this deal a lot better than the two-year deal. Definitely fills a need offensively for the Tigers.

Just in time for the all-too-common rite of passage for 36-year-old MLB players: a 50-point drop on BA, 100 points in OPS, HRs and RBIs cut in half. Plus in Comerica Park, Damon's C-minus-level defense converts to a D-plus, at best.

With cement-legged Ordonez in right, Austin Jackson is gonna be running 500 yards a game.

Wasn't that around what the Yankees were offering him originally?

Something like that. I'd say that the Yankees made a mistake playing hardball over a few bucks with Damon and then signing Nick Johnson, but I'm sure they will just add another bat when Johnson gets hurt again.

I got the Nats winning 75 games this season. Maybe even 76. Is that crazy?
76, that's the spirit. However, 70-80 isn't that far fetched.

I thought that it was Damon trying to play hardball by trying to get a multi-year deal for a lot more money. And look where it got him.

Detroit and it's actually not a bad move for him. The Tigers will be in contention.
