Good God, another good reason why I'm so glad to be retired and only pass Bruton Smith Parkway to and from Florida every winter. Night race? Not a bad idea because Hampton can get pretty steamy in July. But on Sunday night with fans (and race teams) needing to be back at work the next morning? Yeah, that start time was the decision of someone in a corner office at Techwood who thinks a distributor cap is something fans wear to keep the sun out of their eyes.

I'm guessing neither NASCAR nor TNT wanted to hang around for a Monday morning resumption, particularly with an iffy forecast. I'm actually stunned they got the whole thing, plus overtime, done without another storm. As far as people in the stands, I'd guess it was in the hundreds (but that doesn't count the cars stuck in traffic trying to get out of the place).

It appears we're about 120 miles northeast of AMS (whatever sponsor name isn't my concern) and we've been socked with a train of thunderstorms for the past 48 hours, and expecting up to an inch of rain again today. It was windy enough Saturday to knock over a pair of large pine trees that blocked the main road in our neighborhood.

I always drove directly home from Hampton after writing my stuff and getting the OK from the desk, but at that time we lived in Lawrenceville. Can't imagine trying to navigate what was left of race traffic on I-75 at 4 a.m. I'd just be getting to bed after a three-hour slog through Atlanta.

I was up that late. I'm kind of mad I wasn't paying attention - live sports at 1:30 a.m. for the sickos is my jam.

Right? It’s like an NL West game going extra innings. The nonexistent crowd becomes its own weirdly charming part of the scene.

27 year old me would have stayed at the track to the end. 47 year old me would have stayed up watching to the end. 67 year old me fell asleep just as they restarted with PRN streaming through the iPad.

IndyCar @ Nashville, ppd., rain

Pockrass says they’ll try again at 3 p.m. EDT Monday.

Also shortened to 225 laps from 300. And they still managed to get network clearance on the middle of a weekday afternoon. I’m sure the affiliates with 4 p.m. newscasts are thrilled.
