How? By going to congratulate the other team?

Looked like a great crowd. For about 20,000 of those seats, it will be the only time all season they'll be occupied.
I totally missed him congratulating the Venezuelans. That is a good move, even if you're never entirely sure what is legit and what is for show with Harper.

Dude got 2 of their 3 hits and hit the HR to tie. I don’t know Harper but he’s been a stud his whole career and not a criminal. I don’t get the hate.
He has been a stud his entire career but he's so cringe. He does the goofiest ass **** (remember his soccer style slide after a homer in London against the Mets in a JUNE game?) and there was nothing about that home run trot that felt anything other than scripted in front of his hotel room mirror the last two weeks. It also didn't yield a championship, much like the 2022 NLCS-clinching homer they want to commemorate with a statue in Philly.

I really like Ken Rosenthal, but this bit in his Harper column missed the mark a bit:

The Venezuelan players rejoiced over their first WBC title, crying, hugging and praying. Their emotions were as intense as you will ever see on a baseball field, in part because of the numerous problems their country is facing.

Uhh Ken, things are pretty ****ing ****ty here too. Of course, the MAGA dorks making up the majority of the roster can't or won't sense that.

I thought that Posnanski column just beat the horse to death. YMMV.

Howie Rose retiring after this season. An excellent radio broadcaster, in the Mets booth since 1995.

He’s had some amazing calls over the years, during a lot of bad baseball. Top recent ones that come to mind are Pete Alonso’s go-ahead homer against the Brewers in the 2024 playoffs and Wilmer Flores’ walk-off homer shortly after everyone thought he was traded and crying on the field in 2015.

Do we care what he has to say?

He is the best. Just glad he appears to be in good health and wants to retire while he can still enjoy it.

Sure. He was/is a bad guy, but I'd much rather hear him than A-Rod b/c a.) Barry knows he's not getting into the HOF so this isn't part of an image rehab tour and b.) he's much smarter and more lucid than A-Rod. He's not just going to spew cliches and nonsense.
He is also much smarter than A-Rod likes to think he is.

He had bladder cancer a few years ago but appears to have recovered into good health. I certainly imagine that new perspective helped in his decision to retire and enjoy more time not working.

As you said, the best. Great career and good for him.

I won’t predict that the Mets will send him into retirement with a championship. Tho 40 years after 1986 would be poetic.

F***1986 Mets and Mookie!! Jean Yawkey is still wondering where is the trophy they promised her and Bruce Hurst is still looking for his WS MVP!! 😎

Cheating because he wanted to be the best ever and being rude to people doesn't exactly make him a good guy, but there are far worse in sports. The Hall of Fame will continue to be a joke as long as he isn't in it.

That said, if he actually opens up and shares some of his baseball knowledge, yes, I absolutely want to hear what Bonds has to say.

The amazing thing about that list is not only have the Giants not had the same guy starting in consecutive years, none of the players appear twice. A virtual conveyor belt of left fielders.

Left field is probably the best place to hide a bat, in a position with the fewest defensive demands.
