It's funny, you think about coaches who have won Super Bowls and the three things you take away is that you should hire someone who has been a head coach before, preferably in the NFL (Dungy, Coughlin, Shula, Shanahan, Gruden, Belichick, Ewbank), elevate an assistant on the most recent staff (Seifert, Flores, Madden, McCafferty, Parcells) or hire a college coach (Johnson, Walsh, Vermeil, Switzer) and if you do decide to hire an assistant for another team, be prepared to be patient for four years or so (Noll, Landry, McCarthy, Cowher, Stram, Ditka and Holmgren).
Coaches like Lombardi, Billick, Payton and Gibbs, who come in and win a ring in three years are the exception and yet,you see teams dumping guys after one year.
