If I've gotta pick a team, he's in my midfield, no questions asked.
boots said:That's your opinion and like noses, everyone has one. So what is the point you are trying to make here? I said many considered him to be the best. You googled and picked several others. Unless you have polled everyone in the world, and we know that you didn't, you're trying to hard to pick an argument.buckweaver said:boots said:Is there ANYONE who is the absolute best? No. But if Beckham wasn't the best, the list in front of him wasn't long.buckweaver said:boots said:But there was a time when many considered him to be the best.
Oh, I think that's overstating it a bit. Nobody ever considered him to be the best all-around player in the world.
Best at set plays, sure. Best at putting a ball on a dime from 40 yards out and around a wall, absolutely. But as the Best Player in the World? Not a chance.

He was runner-up twice, to Rivaldo in 1999 and Figo in 2001.
The list isn't long, but Becks never would be in consideration for No. 1 either: Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Figo, Henry, Raul, Rivaldo were all more complete players ...
Beckham has one talent that's greater than anyone in the world. He's average, at best, in everything else. As per your statement, there was never "a time when many considered him to be the best."
Now if you wanted to argue about a current soccer star in his prime willing to play in the United States to promote the sport, you might generate a debate. What you're talking about isn't debateable. It's opinion. Everyone has one.
If I stopped walking right now, I'm willing to bet that your face would turn brown.Big Buckin' agate_monkey said:boots said:That's your opinion and like noses, everyone has one. Why do we have a message board if we can't share opinions?

Nope. Won't even give you that one, buckster.
That's not to say I don't hear it a lot. And then every time I see him play, the man STILL does ... not ... make ... mistakes.
He orchestrates a game when he's in it. An absolute game-changer, to this day.
I don't even know what the English coach was thinking earlier this year.
boots said:I enjoy futbol, or soccer here in the U.S. I remember when Pele came and invigorated the sport. Beckham is not Pele but it would be nice if he could generate a positive reaction to the sport.
What hurts soccer is that stars such as Pele and Beckham come over here long after their prime. What is needed is for some players in their prime to play and promote the sport in the U.S.

Just because.
I like these old threads just to review the dead warhorses. Angola! in this one, shotglass as well.
yet boots stays alive in 2009.
