Phillies just got swept by the Pirates. Yeah the only they are going to be in this year is denial.
That was the first time this season the Pirates won three games in a row. They are still 15 games below .500. Only the Rockies, White Sox, Marlins, and Athletics have worse records.

In the Phillies' defense, they did have to face Skenes Sunday. He gave up only an unearned run before he was pulled with two out in the eighth, dropping his ERA to 1.88. His record is 4-6.

If you're a team with slumping batters, as the Phils are, Skenes is not where you're gonna get well.

Once you're a parent, it's amazing how little the result matters when going to the ballgame. A sunny day, my son going berserk meeting a giant purple mascot, meeting Tom Hamilton and seeing José Ramírez hit a home run and screaming your head off and high-fiving a kindergartner only to find out he has a quarter-inch layer of blue cotton candy coating every inch of his hands is pretty great.
Until they get old enough that if their team loses, they had a miserable time.

Giants sweep the Braves. Three one-run decisions. Yes, the Braves are making the key mistake at the worst moment, but, hey, how about those Giants?
It's bad and getting worse for the Braves. Smith-Shauver, elbow surgery, see him in 2026 2027.

Either he's going to do the modern GM thing of emerging from his bunker when ****'s at its worst to act like he's accountable or Snitker's in trouble.
I mean Snit hasn't done himself any favors this season (bullpen management, throwing players and the grounds crew under the bus, etc.), but AA didn't exactly crush the offseason -- especially in regard to the bullpen. That said, if they replace Snit with Fredi, BARF.

How about the team with the best record in baseball, whose two 1/1s didn't have jobs in spring training and had to play their way onto the team. Things have worked out OK for Spencer Torkelson and Casey Mize
The Tigers are amazing. They looked like a team of busts. Now -- at least a year after what seemed like their expiration dates -- the busts are producing. Good for them. They are the opposite of the Orioles, who seemed to have a solar system of prospects a year ago. Even Orioles All-Stars have regressed to National League players of the 1980s.

I hate this news for Corbin Burnes, an awesome one-year Oriole. But when fans objected to management's refusal or unwillingness to sign accomplished starting pitchers to $1,000,000-per-start contracts, this is what I thought of. If somebody has achieved enough to become a premium pitcher, he's due to get hurt. See Cole, Gerrit, et al.

Holy ****, what a catch!
I've seen guys climb the wall and I've seen guys jump to steal a home run. I've never seen somebody climb the wall, kind of hang out up there for a second or two, and then steal a home run that was several feet over the fence.

It's a real shame that guy has to play in West Sacramento. He's tremendous. He stole a game from the Orioles, a real team that people care about, on Saturday. And that is one of the best catches I have ever seen.

Cardinals ****ed up a four-run rally from 3-0 down to lose 5-4 in extras. First, Helsley gives up a long drive that Victor Scott completely ****ed up, turning around until it hit off his glove for a HR to tie it at 4. Then the Cards don't bother trying to bunt Scott over in the bottom of the 10th and then go meekly down. THIS kind of **** is why the stands still have vast swaths of empty seats.

I've watched this back like five times and I believe it less every time I see it. That was gymnast-level athleticism to not wind up on his head behind the wall, and that doesn't even include the act of actually making the catch. Could be the most amazing thing I've seen on a baseball field in my nearly 45 years of watching the game.

I remember Otis Nixon robbing Andy Van Slyke like that when he was in Atlanta. But yeah, that's one of the most athletic catches I'll ever see.
