One name being mentioned (at least on sports talk radio) is Steve Spagnuolo, talk about someone who is better suited to a coordinator and shouldn't be near a HC position.

Spags knows what he has in KC, and I think he’s making a few mil/year at this point. And he’s 65, so he’s probably done by 2030.

The Giants had to do something, so Daboll is gone. The problem is, the Giants have “had to do something” for a decade. It’s hard to be that bad for that long in today’s NFL.

The depths of ineptness for the Giants and Jets, for this long period, is astounding.

Even by the standards of NFL head coaches, Brian Daboll is a barely literate moron. He was bad at everything a head coach has to be reasonably good at: Clock management, at least pretending to know the rules while breaking them, setting a measured tone for an organization, figuring out a way to keep upright the only guy who could help him keep his job. He is somehow worse than Ben McAdoo AND Joe Judge, which is incredible. As @Deskgrunt50 noted, it should be impossible to be this bad for this long and New Jersey's got that times two.

All of these things can be true. The Giants can be a historically successful franchise that's been abjectly awful for a decade in a league in which it's supposed to be hard to be abjectly awful for a decade (it's much easier now that the NFL has made it impossible to succeed w/o an elite QB, but old perceptions persist).

Stefanski threads that needle of retread who will likely succeed at his next stop: He had some success with a dysfunctional franchise -- but fell short of going all the way -- and extracted all he could from it. Vrabel-lite. He can be choosy as to his next gig.

I really think Stefanski is underrated. Getting that team to the playoffs in 2020 and willing them to a playoff win from his basement was impressive. Haslam cut him off at the knees with the Watson trade. And my hot take of Mayfield turning out to be a better bet than Watson came true.

Stefanski seemed to be building something before the Watson deal. If they had stuck with Mayfield and built around him, they could have been good.

That said, I've also seen him outsmart himself far too often, especially when he would refuse to ride the running game when Chubb was tearing defenses apart.

Joe Judge and Brian Daboll are two coaches of whom you could immediately discern two things:
1) They would fail immediately.
2) They would be forgotten even sooner, never to be head coaches again.

In Chapel Hill, they should immediately begin construction on a statue in his honor. Mara's, that is.

Belichick wanted that job last year too, but Lombardi floated some BS about Bill not wanting to “rebuild.” As if the Giants were really considering him. Three years ago, maybe. Now, not so much, especially with the girlfriend and her grift.

Not many people have tarnished their reputation more quickly and thoroughly than Bill Belichick. Phil Mickelson is on the list.

Giants should stay far away. So based on recent history, Belichick is a lock to be the Giants’ next head coach.

Some of these teams looking for their umpteenth coach in 10 years probably need a candidate who asks them some hard questions.

Raiders: So what is the deal with Tom Brady? Is he the defacto President of Football Ops? Consultant to Davis? How often is he in the building? Why isn't he here during my interview? Oh, he's on the phone listening? I'm out.

Giants: What have you learned from your previous hiring processes and why is this one different? Is the person who made the call on Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones still in the building? They are? I'm out.

Titans: Is the person who decided to fire Mike Vrabel still in the building. The owner did? I'm out.


Too many of these organizations don't realize the problems with the franchises are further up the chain, or have front office types poisoning the entire operation. I give credit to a team like the Panthers. The owner, David Tepper, knew he had become the problem and nobody wanted anything to do with his team. He had to pay a "penalty year" to get Canales on board, a sixth year, and elevated the assistant GM and appears to have mellowed out some. And now they're in the playoffs.

Guys like that though tend to return to being as stupid as possible as soon as they sniff some success, because they think they had something to do with it and/or they want credit for the next burst of success. Look at dip**** Jimmy Dolan deciding to fire Tom Thibodeau after the most successful Knicks season this century.
