If the AD there when K hangs it up is smart he won't limit the search to "family" or give K all the power to choose the next coach.

As a Carolina fan, I am hoping that Duke AD Kevin White handles the replacing of Coach K with the same skill and aptitude that he displayed during his multiple Notre Dame football coaching searches.

But K would never do anything as calculated or manipulative as that.

Eh, as much as the rest of us dislike Dookies, they do have a culture that they all seem to believe in. Barring some unsavory turn of events leading to his exit, I can see this as a time that giving him that power makes sense. It might even prompt him to retire a couple years early instead of the all-too-familiar story of staying too late and turning the matter into a big controversy with hard feelings.

I don't think Amaker should be a head coach in a major conference. Things did not work out well at Michigan and before that at Seton Hall.

Why would Marquette be better than Wake?

Hell, why would it be better than Wichita State?

Well, it's open, for one thing.

(Yes, I know you're talking about it in relation to Marshall. I'm just being an ass.)

He did great at Seton Hall and took over at Michigan as they were starting probation.

Well, Krzyzewksi could always do like Dean Smith did, and retire just before the season, so they have no choice BUT to give the job to his hand-picked guy.

If Smith had retired shortly after his last season, I think conventional wisdom says Roy Williams takes that job then. Maybe not... Maybe it really is true about wanting to be the guy who follows the (two) guys who get canned after following THE GUY.

Wojo is the perfect patsy for Duke, if that's how they do it. If he does well, great... If not, there are some decent branches on that coaching tree to go to if that's the way they decide to go.

And it's funny, as much as people dog Guthridge, he did make the Final Four twice in three years, including once as an 8-seed.

I was covering the tournament in New Orleans in 2001 when Penn State beat Carolina in the second round and Doherty started crying during the press conference. This was the same year he won AP Coach of the Year, and one of the beat writers sitting behind me, turned to his columnist and said, "This is the beginning of the end for him."

I think Duke is the only job where I think there is at least a 90 percent chance they will hire someone who has played or coached there before. Brad Stevens would have been the exception and still could be. The program has had so much success under Krzyzewski that it would seem crazy to go a different direction, at least initially.

I'm curious how close he is to retiring. I'll be stunned if he's still there in three years.

If Coach K retires in three to four years, Doc Rivers would be a dynamite hire. Rivers has been a head coach in the NBA since 1999 and might be looking for a change of scenery, especially if he leads to the Clips to a title. He's familiar with the Duke family, he could keep the current staff intact and he would probably be a stellar recruiter.

I have a hard time getting a gauge on how long Krzyzewski wants to go, but he's getting up there. I can't imagine Roy Williams still coaching UNC in five years. It could be interesting to see what the ACC looks like in a few years. Depending on how those hires go it could be a real opportunity for the other conference schools.

Boeheim, too, although Mike Hopkins is the coach-in-waiting there. Jimmy B might be the first one of the Hall of Famers to retire.

Late to the party, sorry, but why would Williams leave Marquette for Virginia Tech? Just don't get it, unless he's trying to out-run potential difficulties.

He took a pay cut too, although he did get a 7-year deal.

UVa seems to be in a nice spot with Bennett getting the program going as Krzyzewski, Roy Williams and Boeheim near retirement age. Pitino is 61 and joining the ACC next year. How long will he stick it out?

Could we be in a situation five years from now where Virginia and Virginia Tech have the ACC's "elite" coaches? That's hard to imagine, but who knows?

I wonder how long Brian Gregory gets at Georgia Tech. That seems like a bit of a sleeping giant.
