Was it right before the game, like when they would normally be taking infield?
I've never seen that, but I have heard of the home team hitting earlier in the day to help stay loose. One of our teams had a four-hour bus ride for a playoff game this season and stopped at a school halfway there to hit a little bit and get the blood flowing. Guys are always hitting in the batting cages before games, too.

If that's the Section's ruling, I hope every umpire in the Section refuses to work those games without armed security and hazard pay.

I think after is fine. I seem to remember covering a softball team (or maybe it was someone they were supposed to face) out of the Southern Section who had to forfeit a playoff game because of an illegal soft toss session. I think the protest was filed after the game.

I thankfully don't do baseball/softball, but the batting practice rule/forfeit has been on the books for multiple decades. Happens every year in California.

In trying to Google to see if I could get the exact story, I got something for every year for the last 10 years but not the one I was remembering :/

It's like things get worse as the school year goes along. Football is fine, basketball is worse, baseball/softball is horrible. Alas, the alarm bells have been going off for years and years. Schools/associations have turned a blind eye. They don't care.

But ... without officials, it's just practice.

You file the protest after the game, when you lose, so that you force them to use one of their pitchers so he can't pitch the rest of the series because of pitch count rules.

If you do it before the game, yeah you go up 1-0 but then the kid can start Game 2 or 3.

Must be different in high school, or I have stuck in my head the MLB rule the protest must be noted immediately.

Result of first game upheld on appeal. Game 2 scheduled for Friday at Buhach with spectators, except for those identified as being part of the post-game festivities.

Jesus. What a cluster. So now an umpiring crew has to go to Atwater where the fans are already spoiling for a fight, and there's no actual enforcement to keep said "troublemakers" from hanging around the parking lot. The administrators are about as strong-willed as a palm tree in a hurricane.

Jesus. What a cluster. So now an umpiring crew has to go to Atwater where the fans are already spoiling for a fight, and there's no actual enforcement to keep said "troublemakers" from hanging around the parking lot. The administrators are about as strong-willed as a palm tree in a hurricane.

At least the half-hearted punishment originally said a neutral site with no fans. Not great (school should have been ousted from the playoffs and put on probation) but at least the umps could manage the game without having to throw down in the parking lot. This is just a farce. Not going to happen but I would not blame the officials if everyone refused to go to that game.

There was one a few years ago that I'm sure made it here to SJ.
Team was screwing around with wiffle balls in the outfield before the playoff game. One guy joined in with a bat and was whacking the wiffle balls all around.
Losing team protested that winning team took battling practice. Protest upheld.

In an earlier story, someone in the district office (who I knew back in the day) said the combatants had been identified and won't be allowed in. The school is on the southwestern edge of Atwater. So don't know if Atwater PD or the sheriff has jurisdiction, but got to believe some law enforcement will be there.
