Weird prep playoff endings

Oh, no doubt. They're cancelling JV games and combining JV and freshman teams because of the official shortage. And in fairness to the potential future officials, no chance I'm rolling out there for $75 a game to have a bunch of jackass parents scream at me all night then threaten to jump me in the parking lot.

But seriously, I read that from 2019 to 2022, in every sport in every state, there are 50,000 fewer officials.

Meanwhile, in Tennessee. Big fight and game declared a no-contest both teams are out. Then they reinstate -- and now it will be 3-on-2 for the final 1:38.

Here most varsity sports will pay $75. can't speak for all of them. You can be a linesperson in volleyball and just call balls in or out and make $50. They get yelled at the most, though. Track officials get $75. You barely have to do anything but the meets can last forever. No way I'd officiate a HS football game. $75 = about $11/hour if you include travel and time spent before the game ... Soccer, you might get stabbed. Especially girls soccer. Those parents are ruthless. ... Softball is the best. 75-minute games, usually in decent weather. ... Wrestling officials make a killing on weekend tourneys.

For the record, that Hortonville team that lost is the No. 1 team in Wisconsin's largest division. The part that gets me is that I think you can make a bad but reasonable argument that the girl shuffles her feet before she comes to a stop. The part that blows my mind is the ref throwing a T in the last minute of a two-point game. If he just walks away and lets the coach burn herself out, Hortonville fouls, maybe there's a ball-don't-lie kind of situation and there's a chance you can get a 3 to tie or even win. Instead, we get a Ref Show in the last minute of a sectional semifinal (so in Wisconsin, this would be the round of 16 statewide) and he nearly single-handedly makes it a two-possession game.

For my contribution to this thread, here's an all-timer from Michigan:

• Team in white has 1-point lead when the trail (wrong) ref calls a travel on a breakaway layup.
• Team in white is assessed an intentional foul when it has fouls to give in a 1-point game. Free throws with :00.7 left decide the outcome.

The kicker? The team in white is Tom Izzo's alma mater (Iron Mountain) and the venue is the Breslin Center. Also, this is 2019. That Iron Mountain team went on a revenge tour to end all revenge tours the following year and the MHSAA kills the tournament in the first week because of the outbreak of COVID.

What's hurting here in some areas are the portals. Guys/girls sign in for dates, then get assignments, and if they don't like the assignment, they refuse it. Kind of like Uber drivers. A lot of the schools in the boonies, or the leagues that pay less, get screwed by this.

Agree with you on the T. The ref who called the travel did not call the T. He did it after the coach threw the clipboard on the bench. He couldn't really walk away as he was going to put the ball back in play after the travel. Horrible all around.

You're right about the positioning, but I think you see in MLB every once in a while where an ump knows someone on his crew blew a call or at least made a controversial one and makes sure there's a very slow hook. And given the setting, I think all parties should have been focused on the upcoming play.

Pewamo-Westphalia is about the nearest thing to a Hickory High that exists any more. High school sports absolutely dominates the community(s), two one-blinker farm towns about five miles apart in the middle of corn and wheatfields. Very very heavily German-Catholic population. Football tailgate parties start just after lunchtime at PW: the Germans know how to do bratwurst right.

On the game calls: the travel was ticky tack, the kind of thing you call in the second quarter. The intentional foul -- well, he grabbed him by the hips, with both hands.

Ohio is March 18-20, and Indiana boys are March 26. Damn near April. Football is pushing the basketball season halfway into the spring season.

California state finals are next weekend. Sectionals finished in February and the state brackets began this week. I'm realizing my teams never sniffed this point, so I never realized how deep into March they went.

I suspect in some states like this one, hockey gets in the way. Tonight was the end of the regular season in boys basketball in both Michigan and Minnesota, which may or may not be related to the fact that the boys hockey state tournaments in both locations are next weekend. Wisconsin boys hockey finals are this weekend, girls basketball will send four teams to state by the end of the weekend, I think, and boys are a week behind that. I know Wisconsin's calendar gets jerked around sometimes due to venue availability issues.

In Minnesota, last weekend was girls hockey state finals, this weekend is wrestling and boys swimming, next weekend is boys hockey, then followed by girls basketball and finally boys basketball near the end of the month.
