That post made me realize that, holy crap, Kirk Ferentz has hit 70 and he's been the head coach at Iowa for 27 years. In my mind, I still think of him as the upstart who took over for the legendary Hayden Fry.

LOL, Woody won three consensus national titles and parts of 2 others.

Best one in a while. Coulda slipped in the ND guy telling the SEC cop that he’s out of jurisdiction but otherwise very well done. UT guy crying that we moved the ball to the center of the field was a chef’s kiss.

I was thinking the same thing. There is a gigantic gap between the top 10 or so teams and the rest of the field. It almost feels like the way women's college basketball used to feel, when UConn and Tennessee were so far ahead of the rest of the field that it rendered the sport uninteresting.

There are definite tiers within the ACC and Big 12.

ACC haves -- Miami, FSU, Clemson. There's smallish second level where UNC, SMU and Louisville can probably pump enough money in their programs to compete with that top tier. Then there's everyone else.

In the Big 12, Texas Tech seems to want to play the big-money game. You might be able to throw Iowa State on that level too. But for the most part it feels like the Big 12 is going to be a one-bid league most years.

It's going to reach a breaking point. Northwestern can't compete with Oregon and Ohio State. Mississippi State can't keep up with Alabama, LSU and Georgia. There's an entire swath of schools in the P4 alone that feels like I-AA to the big schools' I-A.

I think it already has reached a breaking point. These inequities already existed. The economics of college sports have merely amplified them.

Which is why, to switch topics on a dime out of nowhere, Curt Cignetti’s defense of his horrid nonconference schedule is total nonsense. Compared to the top of the conference, the bottom
third (at least) of the Big Ten is much weaker than the bottom third of the SEC compared to its top. So that ninth Big Ten game, in terms of the weakest foe you play, isn’t some gauntlet-running ordeal. It’s ****ing UCLA, Purdue, Northwestern or Maryland. Not all that much better than playing a body bag Group of Five game.

It’s partly a matter of resources and how they’re allocated, but also a reflection of the inequities you point out.
