Alabama lost to FSU. Texas lost to Florida. Georgia Tech lost to NC State; so did Virginia. Good teams lose to bad teams all the time.

I don't know if I think there are 12 teams that have "earned" the right to play for a title, I do think that playing so many must win games in a row for some teams will make the first and second rounds very interesting. Particularly when its a team that wasn't in a conference title game playing a team coming off a loss in a conference title game.

It’s always about ratings. Ohio State will bring more eyeballs even in a blowout than two strong West Coast teams playing each other. It’s why Michigan “at” Northwestern was their Big Noon game this week. They just got lucky that Michigan miscues made it a close game.

By my guess, only the top four could survive a loss and still make the playoff. From 5-11 (BYU) its win out and their in. I don't see Texas Tech getting in if they lose the conference title game.

Oh the "circle of destiny" in the SEC is amazing. Ole Miss beats OK, who beat Bama, who beat Georgia who beat...Ole Miss. See They're all great! And Texas AM hasn't played ANY of them. But they beat ND, who beat USC who beat Iowa I guess, who haven't beaten anyone decent.

A&M did win at Notre Dame, which looks better and better every week.

But yes, they have faced an incredibly weak schedule in conference. Five teams with losing records; an injury -decimated Missouri and an LSU team that had completely quit on its coach.

North Texas is ranked in the AP poll for the first time since 1959. They could back-door their way into the CFP but it won't be easy because they have Rice, Temple and the AAC championship game (if they win a tiebreaker). If they do, though, they'll have earned it.

Navy has a decent chance to make the league title game, but do they really want that if it compromises their chances to beat Army?

Nobody is covering themselves in glory this year. There have been probably eight or nine teams that, whenever they've started to look promising, stubbed their toe if not fell apart completely.

This is all the inevitable result of the B1G and SEC expansions. Take in more good teams, other good teams will have tougher schedules than they used to. Back in the say Alabama would play Oklahoma in bowl games or not at all. OK, maybe a home and home once every 20 years.

I hate the "eye test 12 best teams metric." Clearly with the automatic spots for conference champs, that's not the case. Maybe Texas is better than some other teams that would get in. But I already know Texas isn't the best team in the country or even their conference.
