If anyone else has been and has any suggestions, a PM with some details would be awesome.

I didn't spend much time there (we flew out of there after an Alaskan cruise), so I don't have any restaurant suggestions, but watch out for the mosquitos. We were there in May and you couldn't walk anywhere without getting swarmed, especially near the water. And don't bother visiting Earthquake Park. It's sort of interesting but the number of mosquitos there seemed much worse than the rest of Anchorage.

Would you just be going to Anchorage or venturing out? We made it to Denali (among other places) and there are some great places to go other than Anchorage.

We'd be going to see as many sites as possible (that we can afford) and just figured Anchorage would be the cheapest Alaskan city to fly into. We'd definitely want to venture out.

I'm hoping we can make it ... but my opinion is that we shouldn't go if we can't do most of the things we want to do. I have never seen Alaska, and it is very high on my priority list, but we're also visiting her mother and stepfather in Mexico this summer and going to Cooperstown to watch my (way) younger brother play in the AAU baseball world series. Time is not an issue, but money certainly is.

I'd suggest coming up for the Midnight Sun Baseball game if you're going to make the trip (summer solstice, every year).

I had a blast at Chilkoot Charlie's as a 22-year-old on the prowl. In fact, my buddy met a girl there and she came out to visit him on the East Coast a month or two after we returned. She never left.

The Brew House also sticks out in my mind from that trip. Had a great steak and some excellent beer there.

There were some other dive bars as well, but I don't remember them so well. I think all the strip clubs are "juice bars," which kind of sucked. Can't say I recommend the place we went. Don't remember the name, though.

Here safe and sound, and I have to say, I'm bagged.

Was up at four o'clock this morning, Ottawa-Detroit, Detroit-Minneapolis, Minneapolis-Anchorage -- the last leg, six freaking hours. I don't know if you guys know this, but Alaska's ****ing farrrrrrrr.

Plus, it's farther on Northwest -- no movie, no audio, no food, one pass with the drinks cart. Boo.

Fun, though. Flight in was absolutely beautiful, so many mountains I couldn't hardly believe it. Just read the Anchorage Daily News at my first bar, near my hotel. Couple pints -- Alaskan IPA and Amber, both flavorful and much-needed -- and a French dip sandwich.

I am happy, but I am also tired. The bar crawl will wait until tomorrow.

I noticed that as well, when I tried to pimp a gourmet club sandwich on a hoagie I discovered last week. It might be the best sandwich I've ever had.

But the restaurant only makes it once a month as a special. I hate them for keeping me and my beloved apart that long.

Why Alaska?

Because everyone I've ever spoken with who visited there called it one of the most beautiful places they've ever seen, and I love animals and want to see some of the big ones up there.
