In Central Florida, more than 19 inches of rain was reported within 24 hours in Eustis, in Lake County, while more than 16 inches of rain was reported in multiple locations elsewhere in the county, according to the weather service office in Melbourne, Florida. In Titusville, home to Kennedy Space Center, more than 14 inches of rain was reported, and flood watches continued through Oct. 27, the weather service said.
While the storms that set daily rainfall records in Central and South Florida between Oct. 25-27 aren't directly connected to Melissa, they are part of a weather pattern the hurricane center expects to help steer Melissa off toward the Northeast in the Atlantic Ocean, said David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center. An eastern trough has been persistent since August, Roth said.

I just woke up and saw the flooding up there. Crazy. I'm a little south of there and we've had some downforce the last couple days but nothing like that.

At the 8:00 a.m. advisory Cantore just said it's going to take 6 to 8 hours for this storm to cross over Jamaica. The destruction is going to be u******** believable.

Melissa sustained winds (175) 18 mph ABOVE the Cat 5 threshold. If Cat 6 existed, it would be one.

My mother's been having issues with her cellphone but I need to check on her and my brother Scott. That's a sh*t ton of rain. I've seen some roads washed out in the Mount Dora area.

Melissa's wind picked up and barometer plummeted in the last few miles as it closed in on landfall in Jamaica. In 26 years of watching storms. I don't remember one doing this to Jamaica.

I was in Orlando in '89 when Hugo passed by, but I don't remember whether there was flooding or not. I remember being out in it, though.

I really feel bad for the people of Jamaica. They are already poor enough, now they are looking at catastrophic devastation.

The weather I'm watching on TV just pointed out that if it wasn't for Melissa, the main story of the day would be the Mid Atlantic. I can say this, it's crappy. The wind and rain woke me up this morning at 4 a.m. We are getting 25 mph constant wind with gusts 40+. It's making low 60s feel like 40s.

I enjoy weather science but don't understand everything, so ... is there a system in the Gulf and/or over Florida that Melissa is pulling across the peninsula that is causing all this rain?

If so, will it continue as long as the hurricane is moving N/NE?
