NFL Week 16 -- It's Bo Time

Suppose just for a minute that the Steelers do the dumb thing and fire Tomlin.

Who are they going to find that's a better coach?

I have no idea. Then again, I had no idea who Mike Tomlin was when their search for Bill Cowher's replacement began.

It is a moot point because they won't do it. Maybe if they somehow manage to **** away the division in these last two weeks, say by losing to the Browns and the Ravens, potentially without Jackson, but even then, his job is going to be safe.

I'm curious how they are going to handle DK Metcalf's stupidity. There is one report that he had previously reported the same fan, but I'm not sure how that makes sense. The fan is apparently claiming that Metcalf didn't like the fan using his full name instead of DK, but that sounds like some serious bull****. Chad Johnson is saying Metcalf told him the fan used the N word and called Metcalf's mother a C word. (Edit: I just saw that Inky beat me to that part.) None of it excuses what he did. Remember, the team traded for him and shipped off Pickens because the latter was selfish and childish. Sounds like a good description of Metcalf's behavior yesterday.

I wonder if the Steelers try to get ahead of it and suspend him a game and quietly ask the league to add a hefty fine on top of it and leave it at that.

Yes, that would be a nightmare, but as written earlier, there was a lot to unpack.

It was fourth down. Time had expired. We had a touchdown. We also have OPI. At first I didn't know the NFL rule about the offensive foul means the game is over. High school and college, there would be an untimed down. So there was a lot to unpack and get correct. They did a great job unpacking it all.

We’ve heard forever that the game can’t end on a defensive penalty. I can be too pedantic for my own good, but I assumed that meant it could end on an offensive penalty. I never noticed that was only true for the NFL. Interesting.

As an Eagle fan I've watched them hire Andy Reid and Nick Siriani and gone WTF, then enjoyed the results. And I also saw them hire Chip Kelly and thought great hire, and it wasn't. So it's not an exact science.

People talk about the schedules of the Broncos, Patriots, the Jags and the Bears, but those four coaches have done tremendous work in a short amount of time. Throw in Canales in Carolina, McDonald in Seattle, the Playoffs will be interesting. I do think the NFC champ will come out of the West. Seahawks 5-0 against the AFC (South and Steelers), Rams 5-0 (Colts), Niners kind of mixed bag with losses to the Texans and Jags, win over the Browns and the Colts Monday. Broncos 5-0 vs. NFC (East and Packers), Patriots 5-0 (South and the Giants)

If there are that many teams with “bad” schedules, it’s hard to claim any team has a bad schedule. Patriots are said to have been lucky in scheduling, After watching Drake Maye last night, I’d be quite comfortable having such a “lucky” team if I were a Pats fan. He’s the real deal.

Considering Metcalf told Pittsburgh media he prefers his given name to DK, I don't think that's it.

How do you miss that? Distracted by the question of whether the guy caught the ball anyway? If Maye doesn’t throw a perfect pass on the subsequent 4th down play, this would be a huge deal.

Two flags were thrown. My money is one ref had OPI and the other had DPI.

That is a ****ing nightmare for a crew and the reason for the long talk.

Obviously on the offense. He pushed the defender out of the way. Weird thing: It almost looked planned. Like that was the way he had been coached.

Niners have a non-zero chance of landing the one seed thanks to Seattle winning Thursday. Of course after Indy, beating Chicago and the Hawks in back-to-back weeks will be an ask.

But playing Tennessee, Browns and the NFC South helped a ton toward 10 wins without Bosa, Fred Warner, Brock for a while, the receiving corps for a period of time and a mediocre offensive line. Shanahan has done a helluva job.

Absolutely. Cheffers or Vinovich are the two white hats that are currently working that I would want to handle a situation like that.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only untimed down would be on a defensive flag.

But, "keep the play live because the guy still might do something," like lateral the ball, which he did. Fine. It you're going to take that approach on plays, then, spot the ball at the place where the refs think he no longer had the option to lateral, rather than where he was first contacted.

Forward progress clearly stopped, end of the play. That rule worked just fine for decades.

They're going to have a hell of a time filling two Saturday slots and the Sunday night game in Week 18.

The only win-or-go-home game will be Carolina at Tampa, but that's not even guaranteed. If the Panthers win next week and the Bucs lose, Carolina clinches. I think Tampa wins a tiebreak at either 8-9 or 9-8 due to better record against common opponents, so if both win or both lose next week, that sets up the elimination game. If there are no NFC South stakes, then Sunday night game might just be Chargers-Broncos by default.

The AFC South or NFC West are probably the best candidates for the Saturday doubleheader, since there will at least be some seeding stakes involved.

If the NFC West comes down to that Seattle-San Francisco game, I don't see how you could not put it on SNF, unless a) Fox objects, or b) they don't want the 49ers in the late slot two weeks in a row.
