Chuck Amato decision tonight:

Sparty apparently going with Browns assistant Todd Grantham (the defensive coordinator who led his team to a hard-fought 30-0 loss today).

Apparently also the primary qualification, above and beyond all others, is that the candidate must have been a former protege of Saban or George Perles, who combined together to lead the program to a dynamic 102-94-6 record over 17 seasons. Nothing succeeds like success.

Gotta keep it in the family. Gee sis, that's a sexy nightie you're wearing. Hand me my banjo, Mom. ::) ::) ::)

Is University of San Diego coach Jim Harbaugh a finalist for the Iowa State job?

He reportedly interviewed last week and concluded (or was told) he was not in the running.

If Kelly from Central Michigan goes to ISU, Harbaugh jumping to CMU would seem to make sense. Harbaugh has done about everything he can at USD -- how much more undefeated can you be? Harbaugh's dad coached in the MAC, and a couple good years there would make him a prime candidate for a top-level BCS job (not the least of which could conceivably be Michigan).

Then again, there's definitely a difference between waking up in Mt. Pleasant, and waking up in San Diego. :o

Sparty update: Apparently the Grantham deal is off, and they are back hot on the trail of Dantonio from Cincinnati.

Considering the throat-cutters, backstabbers and political backroom-dealers in the mix, all rumors are doubtful, and even the most preposterous longshots can never be ruled out. Just imagine the stupidest thing possible, they'll figure out some way to do it.

Wouldn't that be the Izzo for football coach scenario played out in the press a week ago? Dantonio would actually make too much sense for Sparty to come up with.

Alabama, anyone?

Might want to think about how that (potential) vacancy would affect the candidate pool.

Amato definitely gone. NC State's early list of candidates reportedly includes Jim Tressel, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Bill Parcells, Knute Rockne VII, and, interestingly, Rick Barnes.

They got Sidney Lowe for basketball.

Maybe they can get Erik Kramer for football, if he can complete his degree this summer.

Izzo is, and I **** you not, more qualified than some of the candidates who have been thrown around. (That would also be a typical move for them -- dismantle the at-least moderately successful basketball program in the hope you could lift the football program up from complete disaster to perhaps mid-range mediocrity, thus leaving you with TWO mid-range mediocre major revenue sports.)

At this point I think what they're trying to do is throw as many different names as possible into the mix, create the impression of utterly maximum chaos, so the controlling faction can finally say, "hire our guy, he'll take the job tomorrow morning," and everybody will be so disgusted they'll just say, "fine, **** it, give him the job, we don't care anymore."
