I'm not getting why it was automatically assumed UW was going to be left out, even if they had won out. Winning out would have meant beating Stanford, WAZZU and USC in a four-week span. Why would they have been left on the outside looking in if they had pulled that off? Mind you, I hate the Huskies and am not sad to see them lose, I'm just wondering.

Hmmm ... my comment was in reference to UW losing. I think UW was teetering because of their non-con schedule, but I do think they would have been alive with some helpful results (Wisconsin losing somewhere, a two-loss ACC champ, etc.).

Moot point now though.

The schools tend to be smaller, but there's a lot of variability. James Madison, No. 1 in FCS, has a total enrollment that would put it right in the middle of the ACC. The Univ. of Chicago, essentially D3, is plenty big enough enrollment-wise for D1.

I didn't realize UofChicago has almost twice as many grad students as undergrad!

The D3 WIAC has three member schools with 10K+ enrollments.

Growing up (and as a young man) I’d never even heard of UofChicago and it was years later before I gained an appreciation of its true stature. I remember reading, in my 20s, a book co-written by Dan Rather about the Nixon presidency. He and his co-author poo-pooed the pedestrian UofChicago background of George Schulz (SecLabor and SecTreas under Nixon and later SecState under Reagan). Sheesh.

My top 5: Bama, Clemson, Miami, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Miami.

Wisconsin will be in top 4. For political reasons, no undefeated Power 5 team can be kept out of playoff spot. Otherwise, I agree with Steak as usual. If Ohio State beats Michigan and then Wisconsin, I bet they're in. Never forget college sports is government of, for and by the Midwesterners.

So there exists a very real possibility we could have a two-loss Ohio State team, a two-loss Auburn team, AND a one-loss Alabama team that didn't play for its conference title, as three of the four teams in the playoff.

If Auburn wins the Iron Bowl and the SEC title, that’s going to be an interesting one. I know Phyllis will snap a cap, but I’m leaving Alabama out in that scenario. You had your chance.

If they beat Alabama and Georgia twice, once in Atlanta, Auburn should probably be the one seed.
