I'd love it if the CFP expanded to six. All conference champs plus an at-large with two byes. The bottom four play at the 3 and 4 home sites the week after the championship games. Then the final four at new years, with one caveat. Either cut the season to 11 games with a minimum of eight conference games. Or 12 and a minimum of nine conference games.

But think of the STUDENT-athletes!!!

Do any fans of 1AA, D2 and D3 ever say a team that didn't make the tournament could have won it? Is it unreasonable to have a 16-team tournament in D1? Take the 10 or 11 conference champs and 6 or 5 at-large bids. Let the next 30-36 teams play bowl games.

If the NCAA orders that G5 champions must be part of the 16, the P5 would bolt in an Alabama minute and form their own association.

Unsure if that's so. More games mean more money to divvy up. Throwing the other conferences a bone might not hurt the bottom line. Look, college sports is in violation of every antitrust law ever written and gets by only because the feds have always defined it as part of education, not as a business. The Dept. of Education could end that with a memo. This administration wouldn't do it, but another might. You don't want to stir up trouble within the confederation of thieves.

How many here can name the current FCS, D2 and D3 champions?

Nobody cares who's champ. Thus, no one cares who could have been champ.

Oh, the schools and their alumni, students, etc. care. But the schools are smaller. That's why they're in FCS, D2, D3 in the first place. Also, they don't get on TV so degenerate gamblers don't follow them -- unless they're degenerates on a truly heroic scale.

The schools tend to be smaller, but there's a lot of variability. James Madison, No. 1 in FCS, has a total enrollment that would put it right in the middle of the ACC. The Univ. of Chicago, essentially D3, is plenty big enough enrollment-wise for D1.

Good point. My D3 school, Wesleyan, is small and in a smallish town and that probably influences my outlook. But it was a big deal about a decade ago when it reached the finals of the D3 baseball tournament.

Why? Seed the playoff. The top guys essentially get a bye game, and the top half likely gets another home game to sell out, plus more TV money. What's not to like?
