Not sure how the Huskies take him back, though, since he obviously doesn't want to be there. How much is a QB who was 5-4 and 7th place in league play worth these days?

Cases like this and the UGA/Damon Wilson one were always going to happen when NIL and the transfer portal opened things up. The only thing that is going to slow the chaos down is school's holding the line and enforcing the contract.

There used to be a Big Ten rule that a transfer within the conference has to redshirt an extra year. Such moves are no longer discouraged. Michigan State’s quarterback last season, Aidan Chiles, is at Northwestern and leading receiver Nick Marsh is going to Indiana

What does the school ask for in damages?

Well I guess it would be different in each case, and I'm sure each school does these contracts differently. For example, in the UGA/Damon Wilson case, UGA is alleging that the contract Wilson signed had a form of buyout clause (but I think they are being called "liquidated damages clauses") if he were to leave the school before X number of years. So they are suing for the remainder of that deal.

There's some speculation that Mizzou gave Wilson the money to pay that off but that money never found its way to UGA, but that's mostly rumors. I'm assuming both Wilson and Mizzou assumed UGA wouldn't pursue that portion of the contract because of bad press and negative recruiting angles.

I'm less familiar with the Williams/UW contract, and I don't know if he received anything for initially agreeing to return to UW and signing that contract. If he did, then that would certainly be on the table.

Tennessee fans were intrigued when yesterday's ESPN mock draft showed Simpson dropping out of the first round. Which ostensibly meant he wouldn't turn pro.

I'm pretty meh either way. He lost 4 games at Bama last year, could easily have lost 6 at Tennessee next season. As can pretty much any QB they pick up.

After the way the season finished, I figured he'd stick in college for one more year, either in Tuscaloosa or elsewhere. Going to Tennessee would have made that third Saturday in October an interesting one.

I think the idea is that next year’s draft promises to be deeper in QB prospects, so this might represent his peak value to the league.
