Was he broke?

Even with two failed marriages, that's hard to fathom. he had such a long career, worked pretty steadily, and was still working.

Then again, addiction can cause you go through a **** load of money.

If he was broke, broke is being defined rather loosely. He died at his home in Tiburon. The most broke person in Tiburon is insanely wealthy.

RIP. This really sucks. Such an enormous talent.

I don't think he was broke. I thought he sold his palatial estate recently.
He was depressed, though... For years. And that, sadly, is the only excuse he needs.

Damn...in addition to the stand-up. so many memorable movie and TV characters...

Mork (the pre-Mork & Mindy thumb vs. finger battle with Fonzie was epic)
Genie
Adrian Croneaur
John Keating
Garp
Parry
Sean Maguire
Mrs. Doubtfire
Patch Adams
Armand Goldman
to name a few...

Don't remember his character name but Awakenings was powerful too.

He must've been angry that Janet used "very" twice in the same sentence. She didn't get laid that night.

This is a really sad one. Whether it was Mork and Mindy, his dramatic turns in Dead Poets and Good Will Hunting or his stand-up performances, I would make it a point not to miss him. Hell, I made sure to be in front of the TV for Carson, Leno and Letterman if Williams was making a guest appearance.

And Huggy, I wholeheartedly agree with you on Live at the Met. That's the best stand-up performance I've ever seen.

I guess this is just another lesson on the power of addiction (and the devastation of depression), no matter how rich or famous or talented you are, it can bring you down easily if you aren't careful.

Also so noted on how a person who made so many laugh was so tortured inside, but I guess that's another example of the Pagliacci story:

Will always be the Broncos' first male cheerleader.

RIP. This is tough.

Loved his late career with What Dreams May Come, World's Greatest Dad, One Hour Photo and Final Cut, but all those roles revealed a guy who was not happy. All dark, tormented characters.

Between this and the Tony Stewart situation, my capacity for wierdness has been maxed out. RIP.

My 11-year-old daughter walked in the room right as I read about this. She has seen a few things with him in it, most notably Alladin and Night at the Museum, but really doesn't get who he was. She found out right along with me that his death is being reported as a suicide.

Her response: "But he had such a great life."

Beyond talking about the drug use, I did not have an answer for that. The really sad part is, I'm not even that surprised. Just sad that he is gone and frustrated by how his life apparently ended.

I read some time back that he was having money trouble.

Said that's why he signed on to that CBS sitcom that was on last season.

Paying for divorces and drugs had wiped him out.

Being expected to be funny must take an enormous mental toll on a person.
It's not something that's healthy or practical.
