Did I just see that Captain Yankee grounded out with the bases loaded and his team down by 4 to end the game tonight? Tee hee.

Meanwhile, I think Paul Byrd was transported through time from 1914 with his windup. Christy Matthewson roots for him.

John Maine, wow, what a start.

Any better guesses now on how many games the Nationals win?

How has Charlie Manuel kept his job?

Johnny Judas popped out as the tying run before Captain Yankee grounded out, of course Kei Igawa and Joe Torre's bullpen management **** the bed before that.

If Damon had his beard he'd have cleared the bases with a double, maybe a triple. But I think it's still A-Rod's fault that Jeter grounded out.

Captain Fantastic not only grounded out with the bases loaded to end the game, that completed an 0-for-6 night.
Imagine if that were A-Rod instead of Captain Fraud-tastic.

As for Charlie Manuel, what an ass.

Down 3-2, none on , two out, bottom of the eighth -- the **** for brains has Alfonseca intentionally walk Barry Balco. Five batters and one Alfonseca meltdown later, its 6-2 SF. And then the ****ing **** for brains manager is yelling at Alfonseca in the dugout!

Why the **** would anyone with half a ****ing brain intentionally walk Balco Boy with two outs and nobody on? That is inviting a big inning when chances are the inning would be over if you just pitched to the steroid-inflated scumbag.

How does this ****ing moron have a job?

Exactly. AP and others would never blame Jeter or Damon in the lede like they did A-Rod the first week of the season in the same situation.

George King of the Post is reporting that Carl Pavano will probably undergo Tommy John surgery soon. He will also become the first pitcher to have a simultaneous ligament/heart/testicular transplant in sports history. What's the over/under on how many days it takes Cashman to find an out in what could be the worst signing in baseball history?

I can't believe I've already given up on the season, and it's not even ****in' Memorial Day yet. Someone pass me the Cuervo, I need to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (or in my case, Cinco de Worko) early and hard.

Jeter was the only player in the game not to get a hit.

What happened in that game? That was like a weird football score

What happened was that neither the Yankees or Mariners had any pitching.

Nice. I just saw that the NYY gave up 20 hits.

First, headbutt, thanks for starting the No. 3 thread, the No. 2 was getting far too long ... and messy. (Sorry about that).

Second, once again, I must repeat that headbutt was the only one of us who didn't laugh when the Mets acquired John Maine. I shrugged it off, the rest of you considered it a waste. But headbutt said the guy had ability. And boy, does he ever?

Why are people giving George King credit for reporting that Carl Pavano will undergo surgery? Sure, George had it but so did every other beat reporter.

John Smoltz continues to amaze. You've got to like the guy.

My question is this: Is there really anything Cashman can do at this point to fix the pitching? Or does he have to keep throwing minor leaguers out there and hope he catches lightning in a bottle? At this point, it seems unlikely he will be able to trade for anyone good.

Hey guys (and girls) just wondering if this happens to anyone else:

I'm a HUGE baseball fan. And when the season begins, I immerse myself in it. Then, baseball, golf and lacrosse start here in my town and I have to work a little more and a little longer and I fall off the MLB wagon.

How do you guys stay close to the game? I'm probably asking people who work at a mid-sized daily and smaller papers, like me.

Do you read? Watch highlights? What do you do?

If Cashman wants to add a starter, Clemens is a free agent. But do the Yankees want to sign him for $20 some odd million for five months?

I work at a small paper and the internet on my phone has gone a long ways toward keeping me updated. I bookmark the play by play on the Yankees game through Yahoo and periodically during whatever I am covering I get on and stay up to date on at least their game.
My family are all diehard Yankees fans as well, so my dad and brother tend to call me when they know I am covering stuff and give me updates.
As far as the rest of the league, I honestly stay up to date by playing fantasy baseball (hi, spnited). I've been in a league with the same guys for about 6 years now and it forces you to know players from around MLB and keeps me interested in games I would normally not care or watch (ie., Diamondbacks-Padres, Royals-Tigers, Marlins-Phillies).
I also like to go through every boxscore on Yahoo at the end of the night and just see who did what.

I guess I meant besides Clemens. ****, at this point I'd say sign Clemens for $60 million. Nothing could be worse than Kei Igawa being run out there every fifth day.
Also, with my hindsight is best vision, apparently Cashman should have traded Pavano for 50 cents on the dollar when he had a chance in the offseason/spring training.

Igawa is still going to be out there every fifth day...by default

Wang, Mussina and Pettitte need to give them 7 innings every time out or they're dead meat.

Even if (when?) they sign Clemens, Igawa still looks like No. 5 (Darrell Rasner? Matt DeSalvo?) until Hughes comes back in two months (maybe).

Yeah, I played fantasy for the same reason. But all my idiot friends don't take it seriously enough for me so I end up playing against myself - as in, I'm the only one managing a team.

If guys on here are interested (and will have me) I'm totally in for a league next season (or one that starts at the all-star break).

Also, as a kid, baseball cards were key to my knowledge. As a teen, I used to study stats like the stock market, trying to guess which players' cards would be worth something. Ultimately, all of them were worth nothing.

Let's say for argument's sake that the Yanks sign Clemens. The rotation becomes:
Wang
Mussina
Pettitte
Clemens
Igawa

If and when Hughes comes back, does Igawa get moved to the bullpen? Do the Yanks call up Rasner, DeSalvo, Chase Wright and (when he recovers from the broken leg) Jeff Karstens as long relievers and/or set-up men?
