Sorry to learn of Terry Reid's death Aug. 4. He was quite a rising star in the late '60s, toured with the Rolling Stones, Cream, Jethro Tull and other top bands of the day. He was a protege of Mickie Most, who also produced Donovan. Jimmy Page wanted him to front Led Zepplin, Ritchie Blackmore wanted him in Deep Purple.
Aretha Franklin was once quoted as saying, "There are only three things happening in England: the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Terry Reid."

Supertramp never won over the critics — “a poor man’s Genesis” and “Prog Rock Lite” — but somehow the stars aligned and their “Breakfast in America” album was a monster hit.

That record and “Crime of the Century” still hold up well, with Davies and Roger Hodgson playing off each other with their distinct singing styles.

My roommate at Fresno State came from a little town near the California coast called Santa Maria. He was a huge fan of a band called Supertramp (this is late 1976) and I honestly had never heard of them because KFRC didn't have "Bloody Well Right" or "Dreamer" in their rotation.

When he played the "Crime of the Century" album for me for the first time, I was blown away. So I was not surprised when "Breakfast in America" was a massive success.

Thanks, roomie! And RIP, Rick.

Ah man. Love me some Supertramp on a casual hits-only level (plus It’s Raining Again).

I got on board with Supertramp when "Crime of the Century" came out. "Even in the Quietest Moments" is a great record. I was glad to see them hit big with "Breakfast in America". Talented band, great music.

Can take Supertramp's screeching vocals only in short takes, but I like their hits anyway. Excellent musicians and a band with catchy, layered songs.

My brother was a huge fan (maybe still is) and he played Breakfast in America incessantly much to the annoyance of his older brother who was not a fan. But I did eventually come around to The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger and Fool's Overture which was also the theme song to the Canadian newsmagazine show W5.
