Excellent quote by a poster over at Sons of Sam Horn

So 24 hours ago, Manny Ramirez was about to be traded, we had no shortstop or right fielder, and Jon Lester had cancer.

Pretty good day.
I'm sorry if I'm missing a joke here, but has there been an update on Lester's condition?

Sea Bass - his physical showed his cancer to be in remission and he is now expected to be reporting on time to Spring Training

Cancer free.

Wow, that's great. Pretty impressive to be back for spring training less than three months after six rounds of chemo.

Well, Manny will probably be traded soon enough.

Yeah, Red Sox fans, we ought to be so proud of our team spending money like drunken sailors.

Theo's legacy, such as it were, for being rather intelligent is going down the chute.

I like this signing a lot more than Drew, though. Lugo's only problem last year was the Dodgers traded for him, then played him only 3 or 4 games a week.

Lugo is the leadoff man they thought they got with Coco Crisp last year.

After the Arroyo trade last year, color me a skeptic. Boston's made a few dumb moves since 2004.

Wasn't the reason he only played 3 or 4 games a week because he was hitting .220, though? I am not convinced that he is the answer for the Red Sox, especially at 4 years and $36 million.

No, he was hitting very well for the Devil Rays and as soon as he got to the Dodgers they started moving him all over the field and sitting him far too often. Being switched from full-time shortstop to a utility player who isn't even in the lineup every day led to his collapse.

Which is also why Lugo took the Red Sox 4 years, 36 mill instead of the Mets 4-year, 36 mill.
Mets wanted him to play mostly second base and some other positions as well, Redf Sox are making him the everyday shortstop.

Lugo makes Edgar Renteria circa '05 look like a gold glover.

Can someone please tell me what the direction of the Red Sox is? Changes every year. Middle infielders should be offensive, no they should be defensive, no they should be offense. J.D. Drew is Trot Nixon + 25% more power numbers.

Ryan last week in a conference call to Epstein.

What's this fascination, if it is true, with J.D. Drew?

Like he, I would also love to know.

Same fascination he had with Wily Mo Pena. And Coco Crisp.

Maybe it's a little overpriced, but Lugo is going to do a good job here. He knows the AL East from his time with the Rays, and he's an excellent leadoff hitter.

The Rays were awful last year, but they got a lot worse after Lugo got traded.

But last year they felt they needed a defensive SS and Gonzalez more than fit the bill, even hit decently over the first 90 games. Now they flip back to offense with someone who is sure to cost them runs on the defensive end.

I disagree. Having seen him play day-in and day-out down here, he's going to be fine defensively. I think solid defense and good offense outweighs great defense and no offense.

You won't see Lugo on webgems a lot, but he won't boot it around out there. Efficient, and a good fit to lead off.
