On Monday, I saw the orthopedic specialist again about my shoulder. Last month, an MRI showed bone spurs and a cyst on the labrum
I decided to give physical therapy a little more time before seeing if I wanted surgery. On Monday, I went to the doctor again, expecting to schedule surgery. The doctor seems to want to exhaust all options before deciding to operate. We decided on a cortisone shot. I'm seeing him again in January.
Has anyone here ever had a cortisone shot? Do they help in any way?
Am I just postponing the inevitable surgery and maybe running the risk of really ****ing up my shoulder even more?

I, at various times, have been diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff. I was given a cortisone shot once before a softball game, and it did absolutely no good other than give me a sore shoulder for a number of hours.
Since I have no plans on becoming a professional baseball or football player (quarterback) I have nixed the idea of surgery, since, I've been told, that surgery would mean about four months of rehabilitation and the inability to take pictures, etc.
What is it that you're not able to do anymore that you really wish you could?

i've had several, in both hands and in my shoulder. the shoulder has been great since since the shot -- touch of arthritis, but no other structural damage -- which was over a year ago, maybe even two. now i need to get the other shoulder done.

I'm a huge fan of the cortisone shot. I messed up my elbow last year and my doctor put me on a series of cortisone shots so I could delay surgery until this fall. It hurts like hell for a few hours, but each shot gave me 6-8 weeks of relief.

Cortisone shots are great. I had tendinitis in my foot a few years ago that was driving me crazy, and the shot completely cleared it up ... like, immediately.

I'm probably going to get one for tennis elbow soon.

things are magic

have a slightly torn rotator cuff (non-throwing shoulder, thankfully) and i couldn't sleep it hurt so bad. couple of months ago, got the shot and all of a sudden it felt better. couldn't raise it above my head and then after the shot, good as new.

get it and steal some. bastards rule.

hell, it's worked so well i've put of pt ('cause, well, i'm stupid)

my dad's had a couple of bursitis attacks in a shoulder over the last 25 years. a cortisone shot did the trick each time.

Without cortisone, you would have seen Andre Agassi's farewell match about two years ago.

Sleep comfortably,do pushups, bench press more than an empty bar without pain, etc.

Hope I'm not the voice of doom here...I have had cortisone shots for plantar fasciitis twice. The first time was a ****ing nightmare. It was painful beyond belief (I usually have a pretty high tolerance for pain - I get fillings without anesthesia, example), there was some blood involved (which I'm not sure is normal) and worst of all, it didn't work. I had another one a couple of months later that was equally as painful, but at least there was some effect, although it wasn't as magical as I hoped.

Good luck, sp.

Mrs. Editude has had two on her carpal-tunnel elbow. Most recent has not worked as well as the first. And they do hurt like hell.

Probably should have mentioned that. The shot itself is about as painful as I've ever gotten. Bring along a bullet on which to bite.

The shot itself didn't feel too bad. My shoulder feels OK, but I'm not going to do anything stupid, no really heavy weightlifting or anything like that for a while. I'm just going to build up my strength again slowly and carefully.
Next Saturday I'm going to a seminar on shoulder training. It's probably more for personal trainers and physical therapists, but I e-mailed the guy who is doing it and asked if it would be anything that an average nonprofessional can understand and he said it would be.

No first-hand knowledge, here, but my dad was getting cortisone pretty frequently for torn rotator cuffs (both shoulders). Finally, he gave in and just got the damned surgery. Said he should have done that in the first place. Told me the cortisone was like renting. The pain was always there in some degree, and he had to keep worrying about it. Got the surgery, did his rehab, never had to worry about it again.

Go under the knife, dude. You might be inconvenienced for a few months, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

As long as you're is done growing, it should be great. My ex in high school had a cortisone injection for tendonitis, even though the physical therapists she was seeing didn't want to let the doctor do it because apparently some say the shots are terrible for young bodies.

Especially girls as young as the one Cradle dates. (oh c'mon it was a belt-high BP fastball) :D :D :D

Potatoes,
Try glucosamine-condriton. I'm not sure what properties are in it that take care of business but a couple of my friends swear by it. And since I got my MRI results and nothing is structurally wrong with my knee (it's patella femoral syndrome and, thus, a permanent, chronic pain), I've been taking it, along with Omega 3s. One pill each, three times a day. The pain is starting to subside.
Might be worth a shot.
