Did Indiana run out of pitching ... or did it not have any to begin with?

I’m going to guess this is a record. After getting swept by the Vols today, Mississippi State becomes the first team I’m aware of to finish DFL in its own league the year after winning the College World Series.

With a nail-biting 27-2 game to start the series. :)

For all their talent, Vols have had way more base running brain farts this season than a team of that caliber should have. Kind of thing that can end a postseason earlier than expected.

And they started by being swept by an average Ga Tech team. Then went 19-6 in league play, a stretch that included series wins over UNC, NC State, Miami, Virginia and University-6.

As often happens on the way to a championship, last year was one of those seasons where a lot of things went just right for Mississippi State. This year was one of those years where everything seemed to go wrong.
They had three of their best pitchers — including Landon Sims, who was a lockdown closer trying to move into the Friday night starter role this year — all go down injuries requiring Tommy John surgery in the same week early in the season.
Their bullpen was a dumpster fire. They lost nine one-run games and probably several others by more than that where they blew late leads. As late as the beginning of May they were still in a position to get into the SEC Tournament and maybe a regional. Then they lost 12 of their last 13 games and were swept in the last three SEC series.
Those years happen. But they don't have to give the trophy back.

Cowbells ring forever.

Not baseball, but because Virginia Tech is a spring sports school now ... holy hell, that final inning in a driving rainstorm to somehow fend off a really game Kentucky team in the softball regional was awesome today. I can't believe I got so much into a softball game, but here we are. Florida next at home for a Super.

Tough weekend for SEC softball, didn't mean enough to 10 of 13 teams.

UCLA eliminates Ole Miss.
Oklahoma eliminates A&M
Duke eliminates Georgia
Va Tech wins 2, eliminates Kentucky
Oregon State wins 2, eliminates Tennessee, at Tennessee
Stanford eliminates Alabama, at Alabama
Arizona eliminates Missouri
LSU, Auburn eliminated Saturday.

Arkansas, MSU and Florida did win.

Vandy softball must suck.

Welcome to the Dirty South.

Which schedule would you rather have if you were a coach?
Is the schedule of No. 1 Virginia Tech the reward for being the top seed? Or would you rather have, say, No 6 Wake Forest's schedule?
I really don't know.

Virginia Tech gets to keep its pitching in order. Wake Forest and the other teams playing Tuesday probably have to go with their midweek starter in the opener, while Virginia Tech gets to go with its top two on full rest.
No. 2 Louisville probably has the best schedule. Play early and most likely on time, they stay close to a normal schedule, and they get a day off before the semifinals (or an extra day of rest before the NCAA regional if they bomb out in pool play).

Thanks.
How do coaches approach an event with a maximum of four games? When does the ace/Friday night starter go?
