College baseball 2022 running thread

I love late late night sports. So I hope they start at 10:30 pm and end at 2 am.

Six years ago I tomorrow I was in the park for all 14 innings of LSU-Florida. Ended sometime after 1 a.m. I believe.

I covered an NC State-UNC ACC tourney game in Durham that ended after 2 a.m. Granted, it went 18 innings, but still...

I covered a Conference USA tournament game that went the same way. They played the late game on a four-game schedule, so a 7:30 p.m. start turned into about 9 p.m. Then a slow game wound up going extra innings — 15 innings, IIRC. It ended about 2 or 2:30.
The worst part?
We were an afternoon paper at the time and I was breaking off for vacation that weekend, so I was slated to work a desk shift the next morning. The plan was for me to do that and then be done for the duration. Unfortunately, it was midnight by the time we hit extra innings and I didn't have the heart to call my SE that late to have him cover the desk shift. I also didn't think we'd be there another two hours.
I wound up getting home around 3, writing my story, grabbing a shower and then heading to the office without sleeping. Worked the desk shift, got back home around noon, and then crashed.
I pulled one all-nighter in my entire college career. This was one of three that I've pulled in this business.

The NBC tournament in Wichita goes 24/7 during its opening rounds.

Out West, meanwhile, the Pac-12 tournament starts Wednesday at the Giants' spring training stadium in Scottsdale, and the Mountain West on Thursday in San Diego.

Today’s first game finally done after more rain delays. Vandy-UT already pushed back to tomorrow and more rain on the way.

Also, Dave Van Horn not at the park for Arkansas today. Said to be “healthy but resting comfortably.”

Cutting it off after two games today with more storms arriving soon in Hoover. That means three makeup games on tomorrow’s schedule, with a 90 percent chance of rain. This train is derailing quickly.

If (big if) they can get three games in tomorrow, the rest of the week is clear and they can play four games instead of two on both Friday and Saturday. But if they lose two or more slots tomorrow, they’re screwed. I’m stunned they didn’t try to squeeze in Gators-Aggie tonight.

The SEC is doing a **** poor job of getting the word out about its schedule updates. I'm having to go to about four different websites and a couple of team Twitter feeds to maybe find out who is playing when, and what the hell they're doing with the games getting rolled over. Two different versions of the schedule on the main SEC website still show LSU-Kentucky at 9:30 tomorrow. One version has that game AND Tennessee-Vandy at 9:30 tomorrow.

In that event, the team seeded highest by the committee just advances. They ultimately did play the thing.

That's probably some of it, but it was like this yesterday as well.
I'm also following the Conference USA tournament because of regional ties and they're on top of things. When Conference USA has its **** more together than you do, you've got a problem.

When the announcers stated that Bama-Arkansas was going to be the last game, the cameras showed the Aggies getting up and leaving the stands after having been on site for about 20 minutes. Florida never came.

Oh, and the next storm system isn’t here yet. They could have been 2-3 innings deep by now. I guess maybe they’re trying to preserve the field from becoming a total mud bog?

Also a little unfair to those two teams from a competitive standpoint. If they only plan on getting two or three innings in and then suspending it until tomorrow, it blows up their pitching plan. Do they run a starter out there hoping the rain holds off, but knowing they can't bring him back tomorrow if it doesn't? Try to get by with a reliever for a couple of innings, but risk having to burn two or three arms if the rain holds off until the sixth or seventh inning?
I'm sure both of those teams would rather kick it to tomorrow and go in fresh.

EDIT TO ADD: Just realized that the loser of the Florida-A&M game in the morning also has to play Arkansas in the late game, assuming the weather clears and they can stick to the latest plan. Can't imagine either team was eager to wait until 10 or 11 tonight, then possibly have to come back first thing in the morning to start a potential 16-hour day tomorrow. At least by banging it early they can get a little sleep tonight.

On another note, the Division I college team sitting in the stands or milling around on the concourse waiting for their turn to play is one of my favorite little things about conference tournaments. It's just such a weird thing to see, especially if you're in the stadium and wind up seeing a random player taking a **** in the bathroom or something.

And on another, another note, LSU has now had its first tournament game (originally in the late time slot tonight) rescheduled three times. At this rate, they might get delayed right into the championship game.

They've got the game lineup updated but have "TBA" for all of the time slots except 9:30 a.m. Thursday. I mean, we can take a very educated guess when they'll play. With four games on tap for Friday there aren't a ton of possibilities. But some certainty would be nice.

There are always two TBAs anyway for the late game in each session. That is just bowing to the reality of the forecast. These are the next games, in order:

Sun Belt got completely rained out in Montgomery today and tomorrow doesn’t look any better. So they will switch to 8-team single elimination beginning Friday.

Conference USA pushed its late game to tomorrow. The third one, supposed to start at 4 p.m., didn't begin until 9:15.
Guess they didn't want a repeat of last year when they started a game at 12:15 a.m. and ended it at 3.
