My dad and I went because it was nearby in Charlotte that year and because my dad loves chess. I played seven matches, winning three, losing three and drawing one. I remember after beating one kid, his father berating him like a Little League dad for losing to an "unranked player."

I won my sixth-grade TAG class. One player was really, really good and made a dumb move in the championship match. From there, it was pretty much a coronation ...

Al Bundy has his four touchdowns ... like him, my life peaked kinda early.

I think I told this story here once. Entered a tournament at MassMoca. Played a 10-year-old who thought he'd beaten me cuz he took my queen, but I held steady and beat him. He went crying into daddy's arms. I smiled. But the next round I couldn't take my eyes off the eye-candy chest of a hot-box 25-year-old who beat me in 12 or 15 moves. Damn wife-beater and perky 36-Cs.

Forgot to add...I truly suck at this game. Played earlier tonight and got pretty much waxed by a guy who, after taking about 35 moves to put me away when all I had left was my king, said, "I should never smoke weed and play chess."
