To play Devil's Advocate here - If you're the Lakers, why would you feel the need to give the bag to Frank Vogel anyway? He's been a perfectly serviceable NBA coach, but not some guy you're going to go long-term with.

Why would they need a coach to go long term? James and AD aren’t being coached, they need a traveling secretary, for each superstar.

I suppose there is a 3 percent chance of it. He'd do it for one year, maybe two. He probably defers hands-on coaching to someone else. LeBron's kid goes into the draft in two years. He's said he wants to play with Bronny. Lakers keep LBJ around for two more years with Coach K, then LBJ goes wherever his son goes after that.

Unless someone out there wants to take Westbrook there's no blowing up this team. I don't see any way a team takes Westbrook off their hands.

I don't think they'd get a real asset for him, but if Westbrook picks up his player option, then he's only on the books for one more year. If that's the case, some GM out there will be interested in a "your **** for my ****" kind of deal. (Example: Julius Randle has a 4-year extension, worth about $26M per year, that doesn't even start until 2022-23. No clue if the Knicks would want to punt on him already, but those kind of deals can be had.) To paraphrase Kevin Pelton here, it's all a matter of whether the Lakers wants to keep digging, or if they want to stop and actual try it the hard way. (i.e. Don't use the MLE or sign almost-certainly washed veterans to the minimums, and instead, use your available playing time to evaluate second round draft picks and undrafted free agents.)
