"Pitino to Iona" seems similar to "Harrick to Rhode Island," from when I was growing up. I doubt Rick can play by the rules (or keep it in his pants), so I imagine Iona might secretly be hoping that his pumps the program up for a couple years and then leaves before the sanctions / penalties come rolling in.

Danny Manning got a hall pass only because his buyout - eight figures - is an issue and because John Currie has been trying to get comfortable in the AD's chair since Ron Wellman retired. And I wonder how Currie will handle this after the disaster which got him turfed in Knoxville after only a few months.

I believe you. A little surprised that Wake Forest went in that direction. Ron Wellman was a highly respected AD and rightfully so. His only weakness - and this is a massive stretch - is that he might have been too patient. He personified hiring coaches and other administrators, giving them support and letting them do their jobs. He also did an exceptional job finding good PEOPLE for the athletic department, save Dino Gaudio (and that was an understandable knee-jerk promotion after Skip Prosser died suddenly).

That probably sounds silly - IMO, it's a vital component in a good AD - given how many schools hire ADs who do anything BUT support the people they oversee/hire.

Yes, Wake Forest is not an athletic factory. But the school has always displayed an understanding of their particular reality in the food chain. What was Currie's major issue in Manhattan? Not a smart aleck/antagonistic question ...

Andy had moved back to Birmingham and hung out after he left Ole Miss, did some broadcasting. UAB has a once proud basketball program which has been on a slow downward slide into mediocrity. As a former UAB player and asst. coach Kennedy was an obvious guy to make a run at. The thing is that over the last four years football has sucked up a lot of money and attention from the limited number of big donors we have. UAB had to pay Ehsan's final season's buy-out, $800k or so. I wasn't sure that there was enough money to sign AK as well as his assistants, but it looks like they came up with it.

This was a badly needed hire. Ehsan is a solid young coach, a player's coach, and he'll be a good one someday, but he's been HC for four years with no conference championships, no NIT appearances, no NCAA's. Nineteen or twenty wins won't get it when you are coaching a team where that simply does not meet minimum expectations. The attendance had fallen into the crapper, very little fan support even if the guy was pretty well liked. AK will sell season tickets and bring some excitement. He may not be the right guy, but he's a pretty good fit. We'll see how it goes.

Andy Kennedy signed the #2 recruit in the state yesterday. UAB has not done terribly well with local kids lately, so this was much appreciated.

I can't think of a better pair of coaches in the G5 than Bill Clark and Andy Kennedy. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm interested in the comparison.
