Forgive me for calling out people who ***** about having to do their job .... on any thread.

I hope poor Cosmos gets those five hours back.

Spnited is right, your job is to cover a player from your area that is getting drafted and you ***** that you have to stay inside and do your job. You would think with the state of the industry you'd be happy to "waste" those 5 hours.

So you never complain about work among colleagues?

Whether or not he liked it or didn't like it, I'm sure he still did his job. Covering track, taking calls, typing in stats, they're all things I don't really like and sometimes I - gasp! - complain about it among friends and coworkers. Doesn't mean I don't like my job overall, and that I'm not grateful I have a job. It just means that sometimes there are things about work that bug me. That's it.

I can tell none of you know Cosmo. Dude absolutely busts his ass on his beat. He puts up with a lot of **** on his beat none of you can imagine, and most of the time, he does it without bitching.
So maybe don't jump off the deep end because he vented on what was probably his day off.

I give spnited **** about his attitude sometimes, but he's not wrong here. Cosmo didn't say it was his day off. If it was, that really sucks. I can absolutely see his complaint.

But if it's a work day and he's complaining about waiting around five hours playing video games with the draft on in the background? As a buddy of mine recently told me when I was bitching about something stupid, "Get off the cross, man, we need the wood."

Yes, it was a scheduled day off. Would have liked to have been doing something with it other than sitting around the house on a nice spring day. Kid was projected as high as second round so my work day Saturday was tied up with it as well. I was just venting, which I guess is not allowed here any more. Because, you know, most people in most businesses actually get two days off a week. That hasn't been the case at my shop much lately. Staff reductions and all.

I didn't fly off the handle until spnited, who doesn't know me or my work, basically called me out on my work ethic and told me to "get the **** out before my sorry ass gets laid off." Completely out of line. That's all you'll hear out of me on the subject. Carry on with the bashing.

My draft day story was worse. I was there to get a local DB's happy reaction to getting picked in the first round -- of course he was then picked in the third.

This was back when the whole draft took place until 10 p.m. (I think) so no second day. But still, a 1-2 hour stakeout took four hours! It started as a party at his parents' house, but every pick that was announced took the mood of the room down another notch until it was like a freakin' morgue. Analysts reminding all the viewers why the pick was falling ("Questions about his work ethic", "Bad workout"). Family was pissed. Player was pissed. Very awkward and uncomfortable.

The best part? After four hours he didn't want to talk because he was so upset about his draft pick. Thanks. (Luckily I pre-interviewed him.) I can understand I guess. Those extra rounds probably cost him about $1 million in signing bonus money.

Getting some compensatory time this week (actually a furlough day, so that's not compensatory). It's not just me. Everybody in our department is getting nailed with all of this extra work, in a time where we're asked to essentially take pay cuts. So none of us are happy. Thus the bitching. Mine just happened to be more public. We've been slashed in half in the last year, but the stories of course haven't gone away. Not unique to my shop, I know. It's all over the place in the biz.

ADD: That's terrible, Grimace. The guy in question wanted to watch the draft in private with his family, so I was glad to not have to be there to watch as he plummeted down the board. Certainly, when I woke up, I expected to be done by mid-afternoon. I fully expected him to ignore my calls later in the evening, but he was actually quite candid.

No idea. But I did feel bad for the Michigan State QB, who didn't even make the list of 10 best players available until the sixth round. They just kept showing him with his head in his hands. At least his hot girlfriend was there to console him.

Jesus. That sucks. From someone who spent 10 hours in a draft prospects tiny living room on draft day -- only to see him fall from late first round to third round -- I feel for ya. That's one hell of a waiting game...second to seventh. Damn.

Of course, I'd probably be pissed if it were my job, but from my standpoint, cool assignment.
