The World Cup running thread is up to 70+ pages, so I'm starting a new one. If you're watching, why? Me, I've come to the conclusion that we suck at team sports, even the ones we invented. Baseball? Nope. Basketball? Nope. Yeah, we're still pretty good at track, but that's more a collection of individual pursuits. So for me, this is a chance for the US to show it can hold its own on the field of play.

BTW, what's the proper term for Ghanareans people from Ghana? (Some of you were thinking it, so don't start with the sensitivity brickbats)

I should clarify that I'm not necessarily a soccer aficionado. I appreciate it, and I've covered a lot of it. But the next MLS game I watch on TV voluntarily will be the first. Generally speaking, I'll watch bad baseball (Braves bad, not Royals bad) before I'll watch anything else. But today, I'm making liberal use of the previous channel button on my remote, bouncing between USA-Ghana and Italy-Czech. And yeah, the passion of it has something to do with that, but I'm also tired of my national pride taking hits where sports are concerned.

If the US can't beat Ghana in a sport, we just need to stop playing that sport.

Have you been watching Ghana? They're actually a good team.....

Watching the game at work.....you can imagine the grief i'm going to get if the US don't qualify for the next round.....

It's Ghana. The US should not lose to Ghana in any sport.

Ghana's best player gets canned in the first two minutes on a yellow card. Ghana, thusly intimidated, scores for a 1-0 lead...
And I'm supposed to gush over this sport, why again?

And don't forget that their two goal scorers from the Czech game aren't playing today.

Even if I didn't vare to watch -- I do, obviously -- there are no other live sporting events on right now, which would lead me to watch the matches. Much better than ER re-runs that are on 24-7-365.

Funny you should say that. I watched ER during halftime. I draw the line at watching a halftime show, which I won't do for football, either. Saw Captain Wilma Deering as Dr. Green's girlfriend. Nice moment.

I was part of the generation that started playing soccer at 6 years old. I've always played, and I've always watched.

I didn't mind being stuck in the house with mono in 94 because I could watch soccer.

I almost missed my cousin's wedding in 98 so I could watch soccer.

I backpacked through D.C. for a weekend in 2003 so I could watch soccer live.

Soccer has always been part of my life. With the World Cup on, it would never occur to me not to watch.

Why? Because the World Cup is the most passionate tournament in any sport, on any level ...

Same here.

I'm watching the U.S. and cheering for the U.S., but my interest in the Cup has nothing to do with how well our national team does. It's about England, Brazil, Argentina and the other unbelievable teams out there, and it's about super-entertaining games like yesterday between Serbia and Ivory Coast.

I don't know why I'm watching. As I have posted before, I think that's because I'll watch people compete at anything. I watched a Foofy french chef take on Iron Chef Morimito on the Iron Chef the other day. That may be the dumbest competition ever and I watched it. So why not watch this?

I love Iron Chef. I will not, however, watch the show where people battle to see who can make the most elaborate dessert.

I'm not.

But it's good to see Ragump is taking time out of his schedule of performing exorcisms to watch some World Cup.

I'm watching because I love soccer and this is its grandest stage, despite what the G14 might tell you.

Playing as a kid and watching World Cup '94 got me hooked. Now, I'll watch almost anything. I've made time to catch some decidedly average MLS games and some A-League USL games during the Cup.

MMMMMM. If you ever get a chance to go to Morimoto in Philly, go.

Back on topic, I went to a soccer school (we didn't have football), so I love soccer.
