When do you know it's time to move on?

So, here's the deal.

It's a newspaper.

I know. I know.

But it's different here. It's a newspaper that THRIVES in this community. A community that CARES and engages and supports it. And will ***** when it's mad. Not sure I want to be on that firing line, but...

I'm being chased to be the Executive Editor of this paper. Chased HARD.

The money is good. Better than what I make now. I wouldn't have to move. It's literally home. The newsroom staff is strong. Good mix of kids and vets at a weekly. The ad department is even stronger. The digital product is good and improving and has a reach. Good newsletter.

It's journalism. Journalism! I've been in PR and I hate where it's going in my industry. I hate "INFLUENCERS."

And this paper was literally my first byline when I was 14. (I'm 50 now.)

I'm extremely intrigued.

But...it's a newspaper. Everything I know tells me that journalism sucks, especially print.

But I think I want to do this.

If I got an offer, I think I'd take it.

More to come.
Take it. Have fun. Kick ass.

But have a backup plan as well so you don’t have your heart broken.

It's not like you have your head in the sand and are thinking newspapers will be around forever and everything will be fine and we're all going to get rich.

You're an adult, have your eyes open and seem to have weighed the good and bad. Go for it, but I echo what Baron said, try to always have a Plan B in your pocket.

Wow, I would be extremely intrigued, too.

And I think I would take an offer. Seems like it could be meant to be. Imagine if you had your first, and then last, byline in the same paper -- with a whole career at other places in between! What are the chances of that?

My advice would be, if you're interested, and you get the opportunity, go for it.

As with most other things in life, it's not like it has be forever, if, for some reason, it wasn't working out.

And I wouldn't necessarily plan that it's going to suck, just because it's "journalism." The field/industry as a whole is struggling for a variety of reasons, sure. But there is still good journalism work that's being done in many places, and it sounds like the one you're considering is one of them.

It all depends on the place, the entity, the company, and the people involved, and the level of commitment that's being made by all of them to doing good journalism.
