In what ways are you still “old school?”

Natalie’s Banana Pudding

2 small packages vanilla instant pudding
3 cups milk
1 small can condensed milk
1 carton whipped topping
4 bananas, sliced
1 box vanilla wafers

Empty the pudding into a bowl, add the milk, and mix with an electric mixer according to package directions. Add the condensed milk and continue mixing. Fold in the whipped topping.

Line a bowl or casserole dish with vanilla wafers. Spoon some of the pudding mixture on top. Add a layer of sliced bananas. Repeat with more wafers, pudding and bananas. Cover and refrigerate for several hours. Makes 10-12 servings.

We weren't allowed to leave campus for lunch but we did throughout senior year anyway. Lots of half-hour dashes to and from Subway and Pizza Hut. All these years later, I find it hard to believe nobody from the administration ever saw me & my buddy darting in the back doors (hi Boots) as lunch ended, but we were generally good kids so I'm pretty sure they just looked the other way.

We also had a closed campus, but my friends and I had an obscenely early lunch period so we’d skip out to McD’s all the time because they were still serving breakfast.

We also marveled that we were never caught, until we got cocky and did it before a school-wide assembly. Our dean noticed, but instead of stopping us, decided to humiliate us by calling us up to the stage during the assembly, knowing full well we weren’t there.

We got back to campus and were greeted by horrified classmates asking where we were and what our punishment was. We had no earthly idea what they were talking about until a few minutes later, when we all got slapped with in-school suspensions.

We were a closed campus even in the early 90s. But if you were a senior with enough credits banked, you could sign up to leave school a period or two early. Technically you were supposed to be going to your job but I didn’t have one and nobody called me out on it.

Two things:

@Flip Wilson I found out today that Milledgevile, Georgia, has an annual Banana Pudding Festival in spring.

Also: I'm watching the World Series and am hearing music, organ music, loud sounds or something between every pitch, walkoff, walkup, everything. Just, damn. There is no break at all.

I put the "old" in old school, so I don't remember if I posted here or in another thread, but I still look over my shoulder while backing up in the car even though I have a back-up camera.
Moi aussi.

I’ve got about 1,500 vinyl records and north of a thousand CDs. They absolutely sound better than streaming - or at least the Spotify type streaming that 99% of people use. The bitrate for Spotify is not great. (I stream music in the car because it’s far more convenient and the quality is less of a concern than it is in a more controlled environment.)
I’ve heard Deezer has a much better sound quality than Spotify, or YouTube Music.

It does. There are a few options with better quality than Spotify -- along with Deezer, I know Qobuz and Apple Music are higher quality. I don't know that I would notice much of a difference in the car, but the next time I buy something from Apple I will sign up for the three free months of Apple Music to try it out.

I never signed up for Apple music even though I have a largest Apple tunes library because there's some weird quirk in the agreement. If you upload your library to Apple music, you don't necessarily own it anymore and you might not be able to get it back. Something like that. It sounds weird to me

I have a pretty massive digital library but stopped using the Apple music program a while ago (whatever iTunes morphed into). I would just use Apple strictly for streaming. (I'm using Swinsian now, which I like a hell of a lot more than Son of iTunes.)

This place is pretty old school for the web. Been here since ‘03 and check it everyday like it’s the agate page of the ‘88 Press-Telegram … even on the difficult days. Loyalty is a big thing for me. I hope the new owner Alan keeps that in mind as he/she/they overhauls the joint; mostly for the worse. I cannot imagine the internet without SJ.com. We are the original online newsroom and let’s hope it stays that way.

Amen to that.

When I have an appointment/meeting, I try to show up at least 10 minutes early. The old saying, "To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be late is to be forgotten."

It really bothers me to have an 11 a.m. appointment/meeting and not seeing the person I have an appointment/meeting with until 11:15 or sometimes later.

Same, micro, so much the same.

It's gotten so irritating to me to be on the other end of things like that. Had an 8 a.m. dentist appointment the other day, the first appointment of the day (by design). I was in the parking lot at 7:50, checked in at 7:55, and didn't get called back until 8:15.

There is zero ****ing excuse not to get called back at 8 a.m., maybe 8:05 at the absolute latest. To wait until 8:15 to get me is being rude and dismissive of my time, and could domino its way to making at least the rest of the hygienist's morning appointments late.

Doctors and dentists usually aren't ****ing you over intentionally,
and 15 minutes on hold is not worth a "zero ****ing excuse."

Sometimes a patient requires a bit more time and care.
And sometimes that patient is you.

I understand micropolitan guy's and BWIP's sentiments, but I agree with this completely. Assuming it's not an emergency situation, I tend not to mind waiting for doctors, dentists and hospital/medical personnel/administrators for exactly that reasoning.

If a doctor spends a considerable or extended amount of time with another patient, that probably means they'd be likely to do the same for/with me, and I'd be likely to receive the same kind of care and attention if/when it was needed. I really appreciate that and tend to give them the benefit of the doubt over it.

I get that. But we're talking about the first appointment of the day.

They open at 8 a.m., and the appointment I picked is 8 a.m., to make sure I can get in and out as quickly as possible. Feels like a reasonable expectation.
