Seriously, SC, this whole situation stinks. You would think that the company would care enough about its employees to have this situation covered. I knew better than to think Cigna would. About the only thing worse is Aetna.

I certainly understand our system isn't perfect and has more than its share of faults, but wouldn't the problem be with Cigna Dental. Surely there are plenty of dental surgeons in your area, right?

Serious question, here. Not trying to be an ass, I promise. I am sorry you're having dental troubles, but why is the system at fault, here?

To quote SC's post:

Except my dental plan has NO oral surgeons in network in the area. An area with close to a half-million people and not a single oral surgeon in network, which means I have to pay upfront and wait on the insurance to reimburse me for what they will cover. The poor lady (I was mean to her and I feel bad now) who had the misfortune of taking my call at the insurance company informed that the oral surgeons "would have to discount hundreds or thousands of dollars" to be part of the network and they just don't want to do that.

Oral surgery isn't an option in some cases. It's not elective. A responsible network, particularly one in an area of a half-million people, would have at least one.

I understand the specialists are highly skilled and should be taken care of. But their acceptance of patients through a network isn't going to cause them to starve or default on a home loan.

Yes, there are specialists in the area. None are very affordable. Many who accept professional positions depend on their benefits, and to be certain journalism doesn't pay well enough to book too many elective procedures.

I understand there are a lot of surgeons in your area, and none of them are in your company's network. Got it. But that's an issue with an insurance COMPANY and their unwillingness to contract with the local specialist, i.e., pay the surgeon what he/she wants. Not the health care SYSTEM.

Basically, because it's forcing someone to spend thousands of dollars she doesn't have to get needed health care. Not a boob job or Viagra pills, but necessary medical care. And if the system weren't set up like it is (mainly, to benefit insurance and drug companies instead of patients) Cigna wouldn't have an excuse to cheap out and not pay someone in a medium-sized city to take care of their customers' teeth.
